To fight Sans in Undertale, you must be on the Genocide Route, have exhausted the random-encounter counter in each region, completed the route’s required unique kills, and reach the Last Corridor with a murder level of 16 or higher. Visible LV 20 is not a prerequisite. Sans’s defeat is what sets your LV to 20.
Start with the Genocide Route
Sans is fought only as part of the Genocide Route, and the encounter takes place in the Last Corridor. The Undertale Wiki’s system-information reference describes the route as strict: each region has kill-counter requirements that must be exhausted before you approach that region’s final encounter, and failing a requirement aborts the route.

Regional requirements, in route order
The table lists the random-encounter quota for each region and the unique encounters the route requires alongside it. The quotas are the figures the Undertale Wiki gives for the route. They are in-game route mechanics, not statistics from an outside study, and the reference does not date them or attribute them to a named source.

Across the four regional quotas, the total is 94 random encounters (20 + 16 + 18 + 40). The wiki does not give a per-region breakdown of how many of those encounters are unique monsters, so count the regional quota separately from the unique kills listed above.

Murder level and visible LV are different numbers
Two values are easy to confuse when you plan the route.
- Murder level is the hidden value that gates the Sans fight. The Undertale Wiki’s Level page states that Sans is fought at murder level 16 or higher.
- Visible LV is the level shown in your stats. The Genocide Route reference says defeating Sans sets LV to 20, so reaching LV 20 beforehand does not show that the route’s kill requirements were met.
Checklist before you enter the Last Corridor
- Check each region’s counter. Once a counter is exhausted, SAVE Points in that area display “Determination,” which the wiki gives as the signal that the requirement is complete.
- Confirm the region’s unique required kills are done, using the table above.
- Make sure you have reached murder level 16 or higher. The reference does not describe an in-game way to read this hidden value, so rely on having completed the regional requirements rather than on your visible LV.
- Enter the Last Corridor and fight Sans. Defeating him sets your LV to 20.
If a requirement was missed
The wiki’s reference describes a missed requirement as aborting the route, but it does not describe a way to reinstate the route once that happens. Check the regional table before moving on from each area. The reference is a community-maintained wiki page, and the route details it gives may differ in other game versions, so compare against the version you are playing.
