No armor set guarantees survival from a creeper explosion. The Minecraft Wiki combat guide reports that, on Hard difficulty, a point-blank creeper explosion can kill a player wearing unenchanted netherite armor. The practical answer is to enchant your armor with Blast Protection, keep a shield ready, and avoid standing close to creepers, because the result depends on several factors and not on the armor material alone.
What decides whether you survive
Armor is one input among several. The factors that change how much damage a creeper blast does to you are:
- Difficulty. The combat guide’s point-blank example is specifically Hard difficulty. It does not state results for Easy or Normal.
- Distance. A blast at point-blank range is the worst case the guide describes. The sources named here do not give damage figures at other distances.
- Charged status. Charged creepers are documented as more powerful than normal ones (see the Bedrock values below).
- Armor coverage and enchantments. Which pieces you wear and what enchantments they carry both matter, and the enchantment is the part of your gear you can control most directly.
- Shield use. A raised shield can block the blast, at a cost to its durability.
Blast Protection: the enchantment built for explosions
Microsoft Learn’s enchantment reference describes Blast Protection as reducing “the damage and knockback from explosions.” The page was last updated 2025-01-30. It lists the eligible armor slots as helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots, and turtle shell. Because the enchantment attaches to individual pieces, your protection comes from what you enchant, not from the material you wear. The reference does not state the exact percentage of damage removed per level, so do not plan around a specific number.
Shields
The Minecraft Wiki combat guide states that creeper explosions can be blocked by shields and that each blocked explosion reduces the shield’s durability. A shield is therefore a repeatable defense that wears out, while enchantments are permanent. The guide’s sources do not give a durability cost per blast, so plan for wear rather than a fixed number of uses.

Bedrock behavior values
Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock creeper behavior reference, using format version 1.16.0 and last updated 2023-09-19, sets a 1.5-second fuse, an explosion power of 3 for a normal creeper, and a power of 6 for a charged creeper. These are parameters in that behavior example. They are not the damage a player takes, and they do not describe Java Edition or other Bedrock versions.
What the available sources do not establish
No single, current damage table covers every combination of edition, difficulty, distance, armor, and enchantment. The point-blank survival claim comes from a community-maintained guide and describes one scenario, so treat it as a warning rather than a measured threshold. This article does not rely on new gameplay testing; every figure above comes from the sources named, and each one carries its own date or version.

A practical loadout
- Enchant every eligible armor piece you wear with Blast Protection before fighting near creepers.
- Carry a shield and raise it when a creeper approaches. Expect the shield to lose durability when it blocks a blast.
- Keep your distance. The sources do not quantify a safe range, so treat close contact as the high-risk case.
- If you play on Hard, assume a point-blank blast can be lethal even in good armor.
Because game versions change, check the current patch notes for your edition before relying on any of these values.
