Atari bought the Intellivision brand, its trademarks, and rights to more than 200 games—not the Amico console. In its May 23, 2024 announcement, Atari described a deal with Intellivision Entertainment LLC for the brand and certain games. Amico Entertainment later said it retained the Amico hardware intellectual property and patents.
What did Atari buy from Intellivision?
Atari said the purchase covered the Intellivision trademarks and rights to more than 200 titles in the classic game portfolio. The announcement identifies the seller as Intellivision Entertainment LLC; it does not say Atari bought the Amico console or the company itself. Atari’s May 23, 2024 announcement framed the transaction as bringing together the brands of two former console competitors.
The original Intellivision home console was released by Mattel Electronics in 1979. Atari’s announcement cites an estimate of 5 million units sold through 1990; that figure describes the original console platform, not the number of games or the value of the acquisition.
Did Atari buy the Amico console?
No. The announced transaction concerned the Intellivision brand and certain catalog-game rights. In a July 2024 update, the company formerly known as Intellivision Entertainment said it was changing its name to Amico Entertainment and retained the Amico hardware IP and patents. The update also said it retained rights under an Atari license to develop reimagined Amico versions of games from the classic Intellivision catalog. Amico Entertainment’s update distinguishes those Amico assets and licensed projects from Atari’s purchase.

What happens to Intellivision games now?
Atari said it intended to expand digital and physical distribution of legacy Intellivision games, potentially create new games, and explore brand and licensing opportunities. Those were stated plans, not confirmation that every re-release, new game, or licensing project has since happened. The announcement did not provide a complete asset schedule or disclose financial terms.
The license described by Amico Entertainment creates a separate path: it said it could develop reimagined Amico versions of classic catalog games under license from Atari. That does not mean the Amico console or its hardware rights transferred to Atari.

Why Atari called it a reunion
Atari positioned the acquisition as a reunion of former rivals. Digital Eclipse Studio Head Mike Mika said, “Uniting Atari and Intellivision after 45 years ends the longest-running console war in history.” Atari Chairman and CEO Wade Rosen described it as “a very rare opportunity to unite former competitors and bring together fans of Atari, Intellivision and the golden age of gaming.” Phil Adam, then CEO of Intellivision Entertainment, called Atari “a responsible steward of the storied Intellivision brand.” Those statements explain the companies’ framing; the practical scope remains the brand, trademarks, and specified game rights rather than Amico hardware.
