Yes. The 2024 report that the Dead Cells support studio was making a Prince of Persia game was later confirmed: Evil Empire developed The Rogue Prince of Persia, which launched in Steam Early Access in May 2024. The original headline needs one clarification, though: Evil Empire supported Dead Cells after its release; Motion Twin created it.
What the exclusive reported—and what was confirmed
On April 2, 2024, Tom Henderson reported for Insider Gaming that Evil Empire was developing a Prince of Persia roguelite planned for Steam Early Access. The article said the project was expected later that year and described Franco-Belgian comic art influences; those were details reported at the time, not a current release-status update.

Ubisoft later confirmed the project as The Rogue Prince of Persia. In its retrospective, Ubisoft said Evil Empire approached the publisher with its own game pitch, and that the game launched in Steam Early Access in May 2024. Evil Empire had also described the pitch and its plan to use Early Access player feedback in an April 19, 2024 Steam community update.
Why “Dead Cells studio” needs a caveat
Motion Twin created Dead Cells. Evil Empire was formed to handle substantial post-release work on the game, including updates and downloadable content, before moving on to original projects. Evil Empire’s own account of that history and its new pitch appears in its April 2024 Steam update.
#1 Best Overall
Insider Gaming reported that Dead Cells had reached 10 million units sold in 2023. That figure should be attributed to the outlet’s 2024 report; it was not established here through an original sales announcement from Motion Twin or Evil Empire.
What kind of Prince of Persia game is it?
The Rogue Prince of Persia is a 2D side-scrolling roguelite action-platformer, not a direct continuation of the format used by Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Ubisoft’s account of the game describes a Prince whose magical bola returns him to the last safe time and place after death. The story begins after he provokes a Hun invasion, putting repeated attempts and redemption at the heart of the adventure.

Evil Empire’s pitch emphasized wall-running, hazards such as spikes and traps, and fast combat. The wall-running also connects with a defining memory for game director Lucie Dewagnier: Ubisoft quotes her recalling the “wow” moment of performing the first wall-run in The Sands of Time as a child, which helped motivate the feature.

The Lost Crown is a separate game developed by Ubisoft Montpellier. Ubisoft describes it as a 2.5D, Metroidvania-inspired action-adventure focused on exploration, puzzles, and combat. Players follow Sargon as he tries to rescue Prince Ghassan on Mount Qaf. The Rogue Prince of Persia, by contrast, uses a side-scrolling roguelite structure built around the Prince’s death-and-return cycle.

| Game | Developer | Format | Central hook |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Rogue Prince of Persia | Evil Empire | 2D side-scrolling roguelite action-platformer | The Prince’s bola returns him to a safe time and place after death |
| Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown | Ubisoft Montpellier | 2.5D Metroidvania-inspired action-adventure | Sargon explores Mount Qaf on a mission to rescue Prince Ghassan |
Ubisoft says the two teams communicated so their games would offer complementary ideas rather than overlap. That makes the distinction more than a matter of camera perspective: the games organize the Prince of Persia identity around different protagonists, goals, and play structures.
What the 2024 story means now
The exclusive was substantially borne out: Evil Empire’s pitch became The Rogue Prince of Persia, and Ubisoft confirms its Steam Early Access launch in May 2024. That history does not establish the game’s current availability, platforms, retail formats, or a physical edition; the cited accounts establish the Early Access launch and development background, not those present-day details.
