No single biome is best for every crop. Crops grow best where local rainfall and its timing, temperature, growing-season length, sunlight, soil, and available water suit that crop. For a useful answer, compare a specific crop with a specific place—not just with a biome label.
Why there is no single best biome
Biomes describe broad ecological patterns, but crops have different needs. A dryland grain may tolerate unreliable rainfall, while a tropical tree crop may need consistently warm, humid conditions. Even within one biome, altitude, seasonal weather, soil, irrigation, and management can change what is suitable.
The FAO’s chapter on climate and crop growth puts the distinction plainly: “Crop growth depends not only on rainfall, but also on other climatic factors (most notably sunshine and temperature) and non-climatic factors such as the availability of suitable soils.”
How rainfall and climate change what can grow
Rainfall quantity matters, but so do its timing and reliability. Too little rain or a short wet season can restrict crops unless irrigation is available; very wet conditions can also be unsuitable for some crops. Temperature, sunshine, and the length of the growing season add further limits.

FAO’s Africa-focused chapter uses the following annual-rainfall and wet-period ranges to describe climate zones. They are regional examples, not universal biome boundaries or crop rules.
| Zone in FAO’s Africa chapter | Annual rainfall | Wet period | Illustrative crop examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desert | Less than 100 mm | 0–1 months | FAO describes irrigation as essential in desert and arid areas; no crop list is stated for this row. |
| Arid | 100–400 mm | 1–3 months | FAO describes irrigation as essential in desert and arid areas; no crop list is stated for this row. |
| Semi-arid | 400–600 mm | 3–4 months | Millet, sorghum, cowpeas, and groundnuts. |
| Sub-humid | 600–1,200 mm | 4–6 months | Millet, sorghum, maize, cassava, and groundnuts. |
| Moist sub-humid | 1,200–1,500 mm | 6–9 months | Examples vary by region: maize or cassava in tropical settings; wheat or barley in winter-rainfall areas and East African highlands. |
| Humid | More than 1,500 mm | 9–12 months | Oil palm, rubber, cacao, yams, cassava, maize, banana, sugarcane, and rice. |
These ranges and examples come from the FAO Africa-focused chapter; the chapter page does not show a publication year. It notes that semi-arid rainfall can be unreliable, although drought-tolerant millet and sorghum may yield reasonably. In sub-humid and moist sub-humid zones, irrigation may be needed during the dry season, while rainy periods can be too wet for some crops. FAO’s account says humid zones usually do not require irrigation.

- SELF-WATERING PRINCIPLE: Through two absorbent cotton ropes, the self watering pots provide water to the soil and keep the soil moist through the principle of osmosis, without having to water the plants regularly. Even if you leave home for a few days, it can help you take care of the plants and avoid plants die from water shortage.
- WATER LEVEL MONITORING: There is a visible water level window on the bottom of the rectangle planter box, which can observe the water level at any time to prevent water shortage. Note: To ensure the healthy growth of plants, the water level should not exceed the visible water level window.
- WATER INJECTION PORT: The indoor herb garden pots adopt a double-layer split design, and each herb planter is equipped with a water injection port on the top, which can directly add water without taking out the plants, which is very convenient and saves time and effort.
- PREMIUM MATERIAL: These self watering pots for indoor plants are made of high-quality plastic, which is light and durable. Each size is: 10.5 x 4.5 x 5.5 (L x W x H), The stylish and simple multi-color design (coffee, orange, and green) is a beautiful view of the garden balcony.
- MULTI-PURPOSE: Our windowsill planter is very suitable for planting herbs, organic vegetables, succulents or flowers in gardens, balconies, kitchens or offices and other indoor and outdoor places, bringing a green, fresh and vibrant atmosphere.
How to compare crops for a particular location
For a field, garden, or region, check the conditions that determine suitability rather than relying on a biome name:
- Water: Consider rainfall totals, seasonal timing, reliability, stored soil moisture, and whether irrigation is available.
- Temperature and season length: Check growing-season temperatures and whether cold seasons, high altitude, or heat rule out a crop.
- Soil: Assess texture, depth, pH, salinity, fertility, and drainage where information is available.
- Light and management: Account for sunshine and the inputs assumed. Potential under irrigation can differ from potential under rain-fed conditions.
- Scale: Broad climate-zone or global suitability maps are starting points, not field-specific guarantees.
Tools for checking crop suitability
FAO Ecocrop
FAO Ecocrop lets users enter local climate and soil conditions—including temperature, rainfall, light, soil texture and depth, pH, salinity, and fertility—and returns crop species with matching requirements. It is a practical way to narrow possibilities, not a promise of a particular harvest.

FAO agro-ecological zoning
For broader comparisons, FAO’s agro-ecological zoning and land-evaluation approach evaluates crop suitability and production potential against crop-specific climate and soil requirements under defined management and input conditions. It is a framework for comparing land and crops, not a simple ranking of biomes.
FAO and IIASA’s GAEZ v4 assessed 51 crops under rain-fed and irrigated conditions. Its approximately 9-by-9-kilometre raster resolution at the equator makes it useful for regional assessment, not a guarantee about an individual field. The 2021 GAEZ v4 assessment used historical climate data from 1961 to 2010 and included future projections based on IPCC AR5 Earth System Model outputs for four RCPs. FAO’s agro-ecological zoning page reports that GAEZ v5 launched in April 2025, so consult the current platform when seeking the latest available assessment.

What this means if you are choosing a crop
Start with the crop and location, then check their match on water, temperature, season length, soil, and light. A semi-arid area may suit millet or sorghum better than a humid-area tree crop; a humid setting may support oil palm or cacao where temperatures and soils also fit. Those are examples from FAO’s Africa chapter, not universal prescriptions. Actual suitability depends on the local site and how the crop is grown.
