Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a 24/7 YouTube loop, start with YouTube’s live-encoder recommendation for your resolution, frame rate, and codec—not a special “loop” setting. For H.264, that means 14 Mbps at 1080p30 or 17 Mbps at 1080p60; for AV1 or H.265, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p30 or 12 Mbps at 1080p60. If your source is 30 fps with limited motion, 1080p30 is often a sensible format to evaluate. YouTube’s Help guidance reviewed does not publish a separate bitrate for loop streams.
Use YouTube’s live bitrate for your actual format
The figures below are YouTube Help’s recommended live-ingestion bitrates; the page displays no publication date. Choose your codec first, then match the row to the resolution and frame rate you will send to YouTube.
| Ingestion resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p30 (4K) | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p60 (4K) | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are recommendations, not minimums or guarantees of uninterrupted streaming. For comparison, YouTube’s listed minimum at 1080p30 is 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 5 Mbps for H.264; at 1080p60 it is 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 6 Mbps for H.264. A minimum should not be treated as the target for a dependable stream. The table concerns the encoder’s incoming feed. YouTube transcodes live streams into formats for viewers, so ingestion bitrate is not the same as a viewer’s playback bitrate or a finished-video upload recommendation. YouTube live encoder settings.
Choose a loop-friendly resolution and frame rate
1080p30: a practical starting point
If the source is 1080p at 30 fps and has modest movement, test 1080p30. Use the table’s codec-specific recommendation: 14 Mbps for H.264 or 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265. This is a practical application of YouTube’s general live settings, not a special rule for loops.

720p30: when bandwidth or encoding capacity is limited
If the source, encoder, or sustained upload connection cannot comfortably support 1080p, 720p30 is an official lower-resolution option. YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at either 720p30 or 720p60.
60 fps and higher resolutions
Use 60 fps when the source has meaningful motion that benefits from it and the encoder and connection can sustain the corresponding bitrate. A static scene or 30 fps source does not automatically benefit from a 60 fps stream. For 1440p or 4K, use the exact table row rather than scaling a lower-resolution figure by guesswork.

Set encoder, keyframe, and audio options
YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported live protocols and recommends RTMPS. Its listed video codecs are H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Configure the encoder to use constant bitrate (CBR), and set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube allows a maximum of four seconds. Use the bitrate that matches the selected codec and format rather than mixing settings from different codec columns. YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Audio
- Stereo: YouTube lists AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz, and 128 kbps.
- 5.1 surround: YouTube lists AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC.
- SDR video: YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth.
Include audio when estimating total stream bitrate and bandwidth demand. A silent or mostly static loop does not change YouTube’s published video bitrate recommendation, but the actual audio mix remains part of what your stream sends.

Allow enough sustained upload bandwidth
YouTube says the total bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving about 20% room. For a single stream, calculate headroom around the planned total bitrate, including audio. A speed-test peak does not establish that the connection can hold that rate continuously; account for other people and devices sharing the connection. YouTube streaming tips.
For example, a 1080p30 H.264 video at YouTube’s 14 Mbps recommendation needs more than 14 Mbps of upload capacity once audio and headroom are included. If your connection cannot sustain the total with room to spare, lower the resolution or frame rate and select the matching bitrate row. YouTube’s explicit example of adding primary and backup feed bitrates plus 20% applies when sending both feeds; do not mistake that arrangement for a requirement on every single stream.

Test the actual loop before leaving it live
- Match the test to the real stream. Use the same source, codec, resolution, frame rate, audio, and encoder configuration you intend to run. YouTube advises testing with audio and video movement similar to the live stream.
- Preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Check that the incoming picture and audio are correct, then review stream health and any warnings before relying on the loop.
- Check the connection under realistic conditions. Run an upload speed test and account for bandwidth shared by other users. YouTube recommends a reliable network and about 20% upload headroom.
- Monitor operations, not only bitrate. Confirm that the stream remains accessible and that audio and video continue as expected. If using a backup encoder, test failover.
YouTube’s general operational guidance does not specify a test duration for 24/7 use. A successful brief preview therefore cannot prove continuous reliability; apply the checks to the actual source, sound, encoder, and network. YouTube encoder testing guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep stream-key and playback choices separate from bitrate
YouTube lets you reuse stream settings and create a custom stream key. The key carries the destination and credential information your encoder uses to send the feed, so treat it as sensitive and do not share it. Stream latency, DVR, and auto-start/auto-stop are separate controls in YouTube’s live settings, not bitrate selectors. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering and matters less when the streamer is not interacting with viewers. YouTube live stream settings.

Common bitrate and reliability problems
- Unstable stream or dropped connection: The chosen total bitrate may be too close to available upload capacity, or the connection may be disrupted. Reduce the format or bitrate to the corresponding recommendation and leave the suggested headroom.
- Soft or poor-looking picture: Confirm that the selected bitrate matches the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check the source quality too; a higher stream bitrate cannot restore detail absent from the source.
- Encoder settings rejected or inconsistent: Check that the keyframe interval is two seconds (never over four), encoding is CBR, and the bitrate belongs to the codec column in use.
- Picture works but audio does not: Verify the audio codec, sample rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s audio guidance, then check the Live Control Room preview.
- Stream fails after a brief successful test: Recheck sustained network conditions and any shared bandwidth, and monitor the actual stream. A bitrate recommendation alone does not ensure 24/7 operation.
