At the Gearbox Main Theater Show on Aug. 29, 2025, 2K and Gearbox outlined a post-campaign loop built around Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode ranks, weekly loot activities and gear customization. The announcement also split planned post-launch content into free events and bosses, plus paid Story Packs and Bounty Packs. That was the plan at the time; both announced Story Packs have since been released.
How Borderlands 4’s endgame was meant to work
The announced goal was to pursue powerful loot on Kairos without replaying the campaign every time a new difficulty rank opened. The post-campaign systems combined build challenges, repeatable loot activities and customization through Specializations and Firmware.

Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode and Firmware
Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode (UVH Mode) was announced with five unlockable difficulty levels. Players would advance through curated mission challenges that test their chosen build and grow harder with progression. 2K said the approach would remove the need to re-farm the same gear for each rank: “Instead, players will move up ranks through curated mission challenges that put their chosen build to the test, growing more difficult through progression and removing the need to re-farm the same gear.”
Each UVH rank was also to include exclusive Firmware. Firmware functions as a gear set bonus: collecting more increases the stat bonus. A bonus can be transferred once to another item, but the original item is destroyed in the process, and the bonus cannot be transferred again. That makes the transfer a consequential choice rather than a reusable way to move a bonus between builds.

Weekly activities for loot
| Activity | What it offers | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly Wildcards | Rotating missions with a guaranteed Legendary reward. | Official Borderlands support notes, updated July 1, 2026, say the guaranteed Legendary can be earned repeatedly by replaying the missions. |
| Moxxi’s Big Encore | A weekly featured boss fight with increased drop rates. | The PAX announcement said the harder fight costs Eridium. Official support notes updated July 1, 2026 say it uses a tougher variant of a different existing boss with a more rewarding loot pool. |
| Maurice’s Black Market Machine | A hunt across Kairos for varied, player-specific loot. | Its location and offerings change, and official support notes updated July 1, 2026 say players can have different stock. |
The announcement said players could use matchmaking by intent for these activities, making it possible to look for allies interested in the same kind of run. The later operational details above are described in the official Borderlands support notes, which were published Sept. 22, 2025 and later updated July 1, 2026. Those notes also describe a timing change for progression from UVH 4 to UVH 5, which followed completion of a required Wildcard Mission; that detail is specific to the update notes, not a guarantee about every future version.
What the PAX roadmap announced
The roadmap divided content into free additions and paid DLC. Free plans centered on seasonal events and challenging bosses, while paid packs were meant to add new missions and narrative content. The exact future timing in the 2025 announcement was subject to change.
| Content | Announced format | What players were told to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Seasonal Mini-Events | Free | The first, Horrors of Kairos, was planned for October 2025 and was to offer Legendary weapons, cosmetics and a new weather variant. |
| Invincible Bosses | Free | High-level arenas using traversal mechanics, with powerful Legendary rewards. A new UVH level was planned alongside each Invincible Boss. |
| Story Packs | Paid | Two were announced. The first was Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned; Story Packs were included with the Vault Hunter Pack and Super Deluxe Edition, or separately purchasable with the base game required. |
| Bounty Packs | Paid | Narrative-based mission additions expanding the stories of new Kairos characters. Each was to include main missions, a boss, Legendary gear, cosmetics, a vehicle and a Vault Card with cosmetics and rerollable gear. The first was to begin with Rush, leader of the Outbounders. Bounty Packs were included in a Bounty Pack Bundle and Deluxe or Super Deluxe editions, or separately purchasable with the base game required. |
Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned
The first announced Story Pack was pitched as cosmic horror, with a darker, bloodier tone. Its planned contents included a new Kairos region, main and side missions, Legendary gear, cosmetics and the first post-launch playable Vault Hunter. The later Steam listing identifies this Story Pack as released on Mar. 26, 2026. That date is its subsequent release status, not a date given at the PAX panel.
Story Pack 2: FL4K and the Last Resort
The PAX announcement named two Story Packs but focused its detailed reveal on the first. Steam’s Borderlands 4 DLC listing shows the second, FL4K and the Last Resort, released on Sept. 10, 2026. The release date is a later storefront status check, not an exact timing announced in August 2025.

How to read the roadmap now
The Aug. 29, 2025 presentation was a forward-looking plan, so its announced timing should not be mistaken for a promise that every feature would arrive on a fixed date. The two named Story Packs are no longer just planned: Steam lists Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned as released Mar. 26, 2026, and FL4K and the Last Resort as released Sept. 10, 2026, on its Borderlands 4 DLC listing (status checked Oct. 8, 2026).
The practical distinction is between ongoing play and added story content. UVH ranks, weekly missions, boss encounters and the Black Market Machine were presented as repeatable progression or loot pursuits. Story Packs and Bounty Packs were the paid route to new narrative missions; Seasonal Mini-Events and Invincible Bosses were announced as free additions. The base game was required for separately purchased DLC, and the announcement did not say that owning the base game alone included paid packs.
Original launch details from the announcement
In the same dated announcement, 2K listed Borderlands 4 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store on Sept. 12, 2025, with Nintendo Switch 2 planned for Oct. 3, 2025. It marked the game ESRB Mature. 2K also stated that online play requires an internet connection and SHiFT Account, and that console online play requires a separate paid subscription. These are details from the 2025 announcement, not a statement of current platform availability. See the official 2K PAX West announcement for its original roadmap and launch framing.
