Borderlands 4’s first-look trailer debuted at The Game Awards on December 12, 2024. It introduced Kairos, a dangerous new planet, and the Timekeeper, a dictator whose rule was threatened by a catastrophe. 2K and Gearbox framed the resulting upheaval as a new wave of mayhem. The game has since launched: 2K lists its release date as September 12, 2025.
What did Borderlands 4 reveal at The Game Awards?
The December 12, 2024 trailer established the setting and central threat rather than offering a detailed account of the full story. Kairos was presented as a dangerous new planet, ruled from above by the Timekeeper, whom the announcement described as a ruthless dictator. A catastrophe threatened the Timekeeper’s Order, and the publisher said that disruption would unleash mayhem across the planet. 2K and Gearbox’s announcement
The announcement also said the Borderlands franchise had sold in more than 87 million copies to date. That was a franchise-wide figure attributed to 2K in 2024—not Borderlands 4 sales or a current lifetime total.
What gameplay features did the announcement promise?
2K and Gearbox described a mix of familiar loot-driven action and new ways to move around Kairos. These were reveal-era feature descriptions, not independent assessments of how the finished game performs.

- Traversal and vehicles: The trailer announcement pointed to new traversal mechanics and a vehicle that could be summoned almost anywhere.
- Solo and co-op: The game was described as playable solo or in co-op with up to three other players.
When did Borderlands 4 release, and what platforms is it on?
The 2024 reveal announcement said the game was planned for 2025 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. In a June 16, 2025 announcement, 2K listed Standard, Deluxe, and Super Deluxe editions for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. A separate publisher announcement dated August 20, 2026 scheduled Story Pack 2, “FL4K and the Last Resort,” and Bounty Pack 5, “Amara and the Vile Shadows,” for September 10, 2026. It described Story Pack 2 as paid story content and Bounty Pack 5 as including a repeatable mission and Vault Card rewards; both were to be purchasable separately and require the base game.
