Roblox attributed its October 28–November 1, 2021 outage to an overloaded core infrastructure system and a subtle bug in backend service communications under heavy load. The company said growth in datacenter server count triggered the problem—not peak external traffic or any particular Roblox experience.
What Roblox said caused the outage
In its November 1, 2021 update, Roblox founder and CEO David Baszucki described a combination of infrastructure load and a communications bug: “A core system in our infrastructure became overwhelmed, prompted by a subtle bug in our backend service communications while under heavy load.” Roblox identified growth in the number of servers in its datacenters as the trigger. The company said the failure was not caused by peak external traffic or by a specific experience.
This is Roblox’s public account, not an independent forensic analysis. The update does not provide deeper technical detail about the bug or quantify the load involved. Roblox’s November 1, 2021 statement is the primary source for its explanation.
When the outage happened
Roblox said players began having trouble connecting on Thursday afternoon, October 28, 2021, and that service was fully restored on the afternoon of November 1. The update gives no exact start or restoration times, so those dates and parts of days do not establish a precise outage duration.
