Dota 2’s Wandering Waters update was version 7.38, released in February 2025. It reshaped parts of the map, changed how players move through waterways, relocated major objectives and replaced random neutral-item drops with a system based on earning and spending Madstone. It is not the latest major map overhaul: Valve’s September 2026 patch 7.41f announcement lists a localized fix near Roshan’s pit.
What was the Wandering Waters update?
Wandering Waters was the name associated with Dota 2 version 7.38 in coverage published on February 19, 2025. Its headline changes affected map routes and objectives as well as neutral creeps and neutral-item acquisition. Neowin’s report on the update describes those features; it does not provide a complete breakdown of every hero and item adjustment.
How did the map and movement change?
The update expanded the river into new areas, adding waterways through the jungles. Players could move faster when running with the currents, making those routes more than a visual change: the river’s direction could affect how quickly a hero traveled through them. The available report does not quantify the speed increase or the overall map-size change.
What changed for neutral creeps and map objectives?
Neutral creeps received new forms and could evolve during a match. Wandering Waters also relocated Shrines, Tormentor and Roshan, and changed aspects of how those objectives behaved. These changes altered where teams encountered key objectives and how the neutral-creep system developed over a game; the report does not establish exact timings or objective rules.

How did players get neutral items?
Version 7.38 removed random neutral-item drops. Instead, players earned Madstone by clearing neutral creep camps, then used a menu to choose neutral items. A team-facing pop-up showed teammates which items had been crafted. This replaced an unpredictable drop with a choice-based process tied to clearing camps.
What other changes were reported?
The update also included hero and item balance adjustments, a Roshan timer, improved item-targeting effects, a backpack “Mark for Sell” function and HUD changes. The report does not name every affected hero or item, so it does not support treating these as exhaustive patch notes.

Is Wandering Waters the latest Dota 2 map change?
No. Wandering Waters refers to version 7.38 in February 2025, not a current 2026 update. Valve’s official Dota 2 Steam announcements list patch 7.41f on September 15, 2026. Its map-related note says: “Fixed spot on map near the top Roshan Pit where a hero could hide within the geometry of the cave.” That is a specific geometry fix, not evidence of another sweeping map overhaul.
