It is an interpretation—not an official face reveal—and the reporting on the image does not identify the model or exact workflow used.
From the classic Doomguy portrait to a human face
In an April 27, 2020 report, PCGamesN credited the transformation to Reddit user u/Panishev and described it as a sequence moving from Doomguy’s 1993 DOS-era appearance toward a realistic version. The post caption, as reported by PCGamesN, was “Doomguy after few AI enhancements.” PCGamesN’s report presents the image as a fan creation, not an official redesign by Bethesda or id Software.
The change is striking because the original portrait offers so little facial detail to work with. An AI-enhanced result can supply skin, lighting, and other human features, but those additions are imagined details; the small source image does not establish one uniquely correct real-world face.
What the AI process is—and is not—known to be
“AI-enhanced” is the supported description of the Panishev image. PCGamesN did not establish which model, application, or sequence of steps produced it, so naming a specific tool or prompt as the method would go beyond what its report says.

A separate Reddit post from May 25, 2019 describes another attempt to picture classic Doomguy as a real person while remaining faithful to the sprite. Its creator says they used a StyleGAN encoder to build a realistic version of a supplied face. That is useful context for the kind of experiment fans were exploring, but the available sources do not establish that this is the same image PCGamesN covered in 2020. The 2019 Reddit post should therefore be treated as a separate project.
Classic DOOM’s art had real-world reference behind it
The original image may be tiny and pixelated, but DOOM’s visual design was not simply arbitrary pixel drawing. Bethesda’s Slayers Club retrospective says id Software sought a grittier, darker feel and used varied reference material, including sketches, latex models, and toy replicas. It also recounts that artist Kevin Cloud’s arm served as reference for the weapon-wielding arm sprites. “(The DOOM Marine’s) arm is just my arm,” Cloud is quoted as saying. Bethesda’s retrospective on DOOM’s arms offers a reminder that physical reference could inform even imagery rendered at low resolution.

Why the realistic face remains a fan interpretation
Pixel art communicates through a limited set of visible shapes and colors. When an enhancement turns those pixels into a detailed human face, it necessarily fills in information that the sprite does not contain. The result can feel convincing and remain recognizable without recovering an official or canonical face for Doomguy.
That distinction matters: the image is best understood as a creative answer to “what might classic Doomguy look like if he were a real person?” rather than evidence of what the character is supposed to look like. The visual transformation is the point, not a claim that AI has uncovered a hidden likeness.
