You do not need a special “Steam controller.” Most Steam games work with keyboard and mouse, and for gamepad play the safest all-purpose choice is an Xbox-compatible controller using XInput. PlayStation, Nintendo Switch Pro, Steam Controller, and many generic DirectInput pads can also work through Steam Input, but the individual game determines how well they are detected, which button prompts appear, and whether advanced features function.
The short recommendation

If you are buying one controller specifically for a Windows PC, start with the Xbox Wireless Controller or a third-party model that explicitly offers XInput, Xbox mode, or PC mode.
Does Steam require a controller?
No. A controller is optional for most Steam games. A title may require a controller, recommend one, or be designed mainly for keyboard and mouse, so check the game’s own input options rather than assuming Steam’s controller support guarantees a good experience.
There are three separate questions:
- Will Steam detect the physical device?
- Will the game receive usable controller input?
- Will the game show the right button artwork and support features such as gyro or haptics?
“Works with Steam” does not mean “works perfectly in every Steam game.”

How Steam controller compatibility works
XInput and DirectInput
XInput is the interface commonly used by Windows games for Xbox-style controllers. It is the practical default because many PC games were built around it. A controller advertised only as a generic PC pad may instead use DirectInput, expose different identities over USB and Bluetooth, or require a mode switch.
Valve lists Steam Controller, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch Pro, PlayStation 3, and any DirectInput gamepad among Steam Input device categories. Names in that list describe supported protocols and categories, not a promise that every model behaves identically. See Valve’s device documentation.
Native support versus Steam Input
Some games use their own controller code or Valve’s Steam Input API. For games without that integration, Steam Input can translate a controller into conventional XInput-style events, or map buttons to keyboard and mouse commands. It also supports templates, community layouts, gyro aiming, radial menus, action layers, desktop controls, and per-game bindings.
Valve’s player guide explains the native and legacy/emulated paths in its Steam Input setup documentation. Valve said in a June 2024 update that Steam Input supported more than 300 controllers; that is a dated Valve figure, not a permanent audited total. (Valve announcement)
Which controller should you choose?
Xbox and other XInput controllers
An Xbox-compatible XInput pad is the least troublesome choice for a broad PC library. Games commonly identify it automatically and display Xbox A/B/X/Y prompts. Wired and wireless models can both work. For third-party hardware, verify that the exact model supports XInput on Windows; a cheap controller that supports DirectInput only may need Steam Input and can still fail in older games.

For wireless Xbox play, check whether your PC will use Bluetooth or needs a compatible wireless adapter. The controller listing may not include a USB cable, batteries, rechargeable pack, or adapter.
PlayStation DualSense and DualShock 4
DualSense and DualShock 4 are sensible choices if you already own one or prefer PlayStation ergonomics. Valve has documented improved PlayStation support, including DualSense Edge and licensed third-party PlayStation gamepads. (Valve update)

Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
Steam officially lists the Switch Pro Controller as a Steam Input device. It can be a good reuse option for Switch owners, but its A/B and X/Y positions and labels differ from Xbox’s. A game may detect it as a generic DirectInput device unless Steam Input is active, and remapping does not necessarily change the artwork shown on screen.
USB and Bluetooth behavior can differ by model and firmware. Treat newer Nintendo hardware separately: the Switch 2 Pro Controller page is a product reference, not proof that every Switch 2 feature has identical Steam support. Verify support for the exact model and connection method.

Generic and third-party pads
Steam Input supports any DirectInput gamepad as a category, but that does not guarantee recognition by a particular game. Multi-mode controllers can identify as XInput, DirectInput, Switch, Android, or PlayStation devices, and Bluetooth, USB, and 2.4 GHz modes may expose different capabilities. Extra paddles, gyro, touchpads, and vendor buttons are not automatically available to every game.

A credible third-party family to investigate is the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller; check the exact regional model, receiver, firmware, and operating mode before buying.
Steam Controller
A Steam Controller is optional. Choose it for trackpads, gyro, desktop navigation, guide-button chords, and extensive keyboard/mouse emulation—not because Steam requires it. It is primarily a Steam-focused purchase, so a conventional XInput pad is usually safer if you also use Xbox app, Game Pass, Epic, EA, Ubisoft, or other launchers. Check availability, receiver, warranty, and region on Valve’s official product page.
Wired, Bluetooth, or 2.4 GHz?

Do not assume wireless is always faster or slower. Connection quality and feature support depend on the controller, receiver, operating system, and game.
How to connect and configure a controller in Steam
Steam’s labels change, but the current desktop flow follows this sequence:

- Connect the controller by USB, Bluetooth, or its wireless receiver. For troubleshooting, start with USB.
- Open Steam, choose Steam in the top-left, then Settings and Controller.
- Confirm that Steam identifies the controller and responds to its buttons.
- Open the game’s library page and its controller or properties settings.
- Choose the game’s Steam Input behavior: enabled, disabled, or the game’s default.
- Launch the game and test movement, menus, triggers, sticks, and every important button.
- If needed, open the controller layout editor and select a template or community configuration.
The per-game configuration option may not appear until a controller is connected. Valve’s detailed desktop and Big Picture instructions are in the player guide.
When should Steam Input be on or off?

Change one setting at a time, restart the game, and test again. Native support is not automatically better, and Steam Input is not automatically required.

- Test the controller in Steam’s controller settings or your operating system’s game-controller panel.
- Use USB before troubleshooting Bluetooth pairing, battery, or sleep behavior.
- Close DS4Windows, InputMapper, vendor utilities, and other remappers. Valve notes that these can make Steam see an emulated Xbox 360 controller instead of the original PlayStation device.
- Set a multi-mode controller to XInput or Xbox mode.
- Try Steam Input enabled for PlayStation, Switch, and DirectInput devices.
- Try Steam Input disabled if the game has good native support or shows duplicate input.
- Restart Steam after changing the controller’s connection or mode.
- Launch the game through Steam; direct launches can bypass Steam Input or the overlay.
- Disconnect unused gamepads, wheels, fight sticks, and virtual devices.
- Check the game’s own controller setting.
- For Bluetooth failures, test the included receiver or wired mode.
- For older games, use an XInput controller or Steam Input’s legacy configuration, which can map physical inputs to keyboard, mouse, or emulated XInput events.
Why are the prompts wrong?
Wrong glyphs usually indicate a layout mismatch, not broken hardware. Separate the button’s physical position, its printed label, the prompt shown by the game, and the action Steam Input assigned. A game may contain only Xbox artwork, or Steam Input may translate a PlayStation or Switch pad into XInput.
Why are inputs duplicated?
Menus that move twice or buttons that trigger two actions usually mean the game is receiving both a physical and virtual controller. Close external remappers, restart Steam, test Steam Input off and on separately, and disconnect unused devices.

Keyboard-and-mouse games
Steam Input can map a controller to keyboard and mouse commands, but the result may be awkward or incomplete. It cannot guarantee that a game designed for mouse precision becomes a good gamepad experience.

Non-Steam games and other launchers
A non-Steam game added to your library can often use Steam Input, but launcher chains, overlays, administrator permissions, and anti-cheat systems may interfere. A controller that works through Steam may behave differently in the Xbox app, Game Pass, Epic, EA, Ubisoft, or another launcher.
Advanced hardware features
Gyro, haptics, adaptive triggers, touchpads, and paddles require support from the controller, connection method, operating system, and game. Steam Input can expose some functions, but it does not reproduce every manufacturer-specific feature.
Couch and desktop use
For living-room play, consider Steam Big Picture navigation, desktop bindings, guide-button chords, wake behavior, and receiver range. Valve documents these per-game and desktop configurations in its Steam Input guide.
Accessibility and multiple controllers
An Xbox Adaptive Controller or configurable third-party device can provide broader physical-accessory and remapping options, but compatibility depends on the attached accessories and operating-system setup. An older Steam Controller support page documents a niche limitation involving more than four Steam Controllers configured as gamepads; additional devices were handled as keyboard/mouse input in that context.
