Capcom’s guide described three main activities: creating a hunter and Palico, trying an early story quest, and hunting Doshaguma in the Windward Plains. The beta is over; the full game was announced for release on February 28, 2025.
What could you do in the Monster Hunter Wilds beta?
Capcom’s regional beta guide outlined three activities, giving players a short introduction to character creation, the story, and a hunt. It was not a complete campaign or a broad sample of every system in the finished game. Capcom’s open-beta guide describes the available content and mechanics.

Create a hunter and Palico
The beta included character creation for both a hunter and their Palico companion. Capcom said these creations could carry over to the full game. The guide’s carryover details were specific to the beta, so they should not be treated as instructions for current saves or versions.
Try an early story quest
A story demo introduced the game’s setting and provided an early quest. This offered narrative context alongside the beta’s more open-ended hunt, but the guide did not describe it as a full story experience.

- Wild New Adventure – Monster Hunter Wilds follows the story of a special Research Commission investigating the Forbidden Lands. Fully voiced for the first time in the series, the hunter is joined in their journey by a colorful cast of characters, including a Palico partner, Guild-appointed Handler Alma, trusty smithy Gemma, and the mysterious child Nata. Together, the team ventures into an unexplored new frontier where surprises await around every corner.
- A Living World – The Forbidden Lands spans multiple biomes with dynamic identities, such as the Windward Plains and Scarlet Forest, where the ecosystems shift between vibrant seasons brimming with life, and unforgiving climates where monsters fight over limited resources. Changes in the landscape will impact the creatures that live there and push hunters to adapt as well.
- New Monsters and Wildlife – Monster Hunter Wilds features a variety of new creatures, ranging from herds of small species to large monsters – some of which roam the Forbidden Lands in packs. Every creature hunters encounter in the wild has carved out a special place in its habitat and possesses unique attacks and behaviors.
- Players can also now ride atop the Seikret, an agile new mount enabling hunters to traverse difficult terrain, perform actions like sharpening weapons on the move, and switch between two weapons while out on hunts!
- Evolved Hunting Action – The series’ acclaimed action-packed gameplay is back and more exciting than ever! Hunters can look forward to tracking down monsters with an array of new moves, special abilities, equipment, and more. The action also now flows seamlessly from cutscenes to gameplay, resulting in a new level of immersion.
Hunt Doshaguma in the Windward Plains
The beta’s featured hunt took place in the Windward Plains, an environment Capcom presented as changing over time. Its overview described a scarcity phase, a storm that brings Rey Dau into the area, and a more abundant phase, with other monsters and wildlife interacting in the locale. That is Capcom’s description of the ecosystem; it does not establish how consistently every element played out for individual players.
Which combat and traversal systems did the beta introduce?
Capcom’s beta overview described several systems central to the hunt. The guide listed 14 weapon types, Focus Mode, wound targeting, the ability to bring two equipped weapons and switch between them during a hunt, and the Seikret mount.

- Hunt giant nature-infused bests – Survive their attacks, learn from their behaviors, and use your Karakuri and your weapons in combination to cut these creatures down to size.
- Craft your hunting grounds – You are the only one in Azuma able to wield the Karakuri technology.
- Hunt in a pack, or be a lone wolf – In WILD HEARTS you can face the Kemono alone or unite with up to two friends (or other players) to stalk and hunt your prey.
- Gear up to hunt, hunt to gear up – Create your character, then gather materials from each hunt and build an array of armor and weapons.
These features give a sense of the beta’s intended combat and traversal toolkit, but the official description alone cannot tell you how responsive the controls felt, how the systems performed, or whether the hunt’s pace worked for you.
Could you play solo or with other hunters?
Capcom described the beta as supporting solo and multiplayer play, as well as cross-play. In the Doshaguma hunt, a group of up to four could include other players, NPC support hunters, or a mixture of both. These are the options stated in Capcom’s guide, not a platform-by-platform performance assessment.

Is Monster Hunter Wilds worth playing?
The beta’s scope shows what Capcom chose to preview: character creation, an introductory story quest, a Doshaguma hunt, and a selection of combat and ecosystem systems. It cannot, by itself, establish whether the finished game’s combat, presentation, performance, or pacing are worth your time. Those judgments depend on firsthand play and can vary by platform; the official beta and release announcements do not provide performance measurements or a completed-game review.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you still play the open beta?
No. The beta is a past event, not a currently available way to download or join the game. Capcom announced the full game for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with a release date of February 28, 2025, and said it would include cross-play. Capcom’s September 25, 2024 release announcement provides that date and platform information. Current store availability, editions, and platform-specific patches are not established by that announcement.
