But the PS5 uses a custom processor, not a retail 3700X. A Ryzen 5 3600 can be close in some games, while newer CPUs such as the Ryzen 5 5600 and Ryzen 7 5700X are generally more sensible choices for a new or upgraded PC in 2026.
PS5 CPU vs. Ryzen 7 3700X at a glance
| Specification | PS5 | AMD Ryzen 7 3700X |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Custom AMD Zen 2 | Zen 2 |
| Cores and threads | 8 cores / 16 threads | 8 cores / 16 threads |
| Frequency | Variable, up to 3.5 GHz | 3.6 GHz base; up to 4.4 GHz boost |
| Platform | Custom Sony system-on-chip | AM4 desktop processor |
Sony specifies the PS5 CPU as a custom AMD x86-64 Zen 2 processor with 8 cores and 16 threads, running at a variable frequency of up to 3.5 GHz (Sony’s PS5 FAQ). AMD lists the Ryzen 7 3700X with the same core and thread count, a 3.6 GHz base clock, up to 4.4 GHz boost, and a 65 W TDP (AMD’s Ryzen 3000 specifications).
Why the Ryzen 7 3700X is the closest match
The 3700X is the most useful single-model comparison because it matches the PS5’s broad CPU architecture and core-and-thread configuration. It is a specification-level and architectural comparison, not proof that the processors perform identically in games.
The clock figures do not establish equivalence by themselves. Sony’s 3.5 GHz is a variable maximum for the console CPU; the 3700X’s 4.4 GHz is a desktop boost maximum, not a guaranteed all-core gaming speed. The chips operate under different power, cooling, memory, motherboard, and software conditions.

Can a Ryzen 5 3600 also match the PS5?
Sometimes, in practical gaming performance. The Ryzen 5 3600 is a Zen 2 desktop CPU with 6 cores and 12 threads, a 3.6 GHz base clock, and up to 4.2 GHz boost (AMD’s specifications). Digital Foundry-related discussion has compared PS5 CPU performance with the Ryzen 5 3600, but this is an interpretation of performance rather than an official Sony or AMD equivalence (Digital Foundry Direct Weekly discussion).
A six-core desktop chip can be close in a game that does not heavily depend on additional CPU threads. The result can change with the game engine, frame-rate target, simulation or NPC load, background processes, memory configuration, and whether the GPU is the main performance limit. Console resource allocation and game optimization also differ from a Windows PC. Treat the 3600 as a possible performance comparison in selected games, not a universal PS5 match.

Why the PS5 is not literally a Ryzen 7 3700X
Sony’s CPU is custom silicon integrated into a system-on-chip with the console’s GPU and I/O hardware. Sony does not sell it as a retail Ryzen model, and it has no desktop socket or upgrade path.
Technical reporting describes the PS5’s Zen 2 CPU as having a substantially reduced floating-point unit compared with desktop Zen 2 Ryzen processors. The reported difference affected certain synthetic or productivity workloads, while having little effect in the gaming workload tested (Tom’s Hardware’s technical report). That is one reason a benchmark in one kind of workload should not be treated as a universal gaming comparison.

Calling the PS5 a “downclocked 3700X” is convenient shorthand, but it leaves out the custom design, differing clock behavior, and console platform. It is more accurate to call the 3700X the closest desktop architectural match.
Are there Intel equivalents?
There is no definitive Intel CPU equivalent: Intel and AMD use different architectures, and matching core counts alone does not establish comparable game performance. These are approximate performance alternatives, not architectural matches:

- Core i7-9700K: An older gaming-class comparison with 8 cores but 8 threads, so it does not match the PS5’s 8-core/16-thread configuration.
- Core i7-10700: An 8-core/16-thread Intel option and a closer configuration comparison, though still not an exact match.
- Core i5-12600K or 12600KF: A newer performance alternative that may exceed the PS5 CPU in many workloads, rather than replicate its design.
AMD compared the Ryzen 7 3700X with Intel’s Core i7-9700K in its launch material for rendering tests; that does not establish that the PS5 equals the Intel processor (AMD’s launch announcement).

Separate the chip that most closely resembles the PS5 from the chip that makes sense to purchase. The 3700X is the closest match on paper, but it is an older AM4 processor. In 2026, the right choice depends on the price, motherboard, and whether you are upgrading an existing system or building a new one.

- Closest architectural match: Ryzen 7 3700X. It is most relevant for comparing specifications or for a low-cost used AM4 build.
- Low-cost older-build option: Ryzen 5 3600, if inexpensive and compatible with your existing setup. It has fewer cores and threads, so it is only an approximate gaming comparison.
- More practical AM4 upgrade: Ryzen 5 5600 or Ryzen 7 5700X, depending on current local pricing and motherboard compatibility. The 5700X retains 8 cores and 16 threads on the newer Zen 3 architecture; neither chip is a literal PS5 match. Check AMD’s desktop Ryzen catalog and your motherboard support information before buying.
- New platform: Choose a current-generation AMD or Intel CPU to suit your budget and graphics card. A newer Zen 3, Zen 4, Zen 5, or current Intel processor is better described as a faster alternative than as the PS5 equivalent.
A 3700X is difficult to justify if it costs close to a Ryzen 5 5600 or Ryzen 7 5700X, or if you are paying a premium solely for the “PS5 equivalent” label. Do not assume a 5700G is the right choice just because it is a Ryzen 7: for a PC with a discrete graphics card, integrated graphics are not the main requirement.
Does a matching CPU make a PC equivalent to a PS5?
No. The CPU is only one part of gaming performance. The PS5 combines its processor with a custom GPU, 16 GB of shared GDDR6 memory with 448 GB/s bandwidth, an SSD, and console-specific software and game optimization (Sony’s PS5 FAQ). A typical desktop instead has separate system RAM and graphics-card VRAM.
Whether a PC runs a game like a PS5 depends on the graphics card, memory, SSD and asset streaming, drivers, shader compilation, operating-system overhead, game port, resolution, visual settings, ray tracing, and frame-rate target. A 3700X paired with a weak GPU can fall short; a PC with a less powerful CPU may keep up in a GPU-limited title. At higher resolutions, the GPU is often the main limit, so the CPU comparison cannot predict 4K performance on its own. For broader system context, see Digital Trends’ PS5-versus-PC overview.
