Minecraft foxes eat food they pick up and hunt small animals and fish. Sweet berries and glow berries have a separate player-facing use: feed them to two foxes to breed a kit. Offering a sweet berry can also make a fox drop the item in its mouth and pick up the berry instead.
What do foxes eat in Minecraft?
Foxes can hunt chickens, rabbits, baby turtles, cod, salmon, and tropical fish. They also pick up items left on the ground; if a fox picks up food, it can eat it after carrying it for a while. A non-food item may remain in its mouth, so a fox carrying an object is not necessarily eating it. Mojang’s fox guide describes their nighttime roaming and hunting, while the Bedrock vanilla behavior reference also documents item pickup, eating carried items, and raiding berry gardens.
In the Bedrock behavior reference, foxes can target rabbits, chickens, several fish types, and baby turtles when they are out of water. Those are implementation details from a Bedrock behavior-pack reference, not a guarantee that every target rule works identically in every Java and Bedrock release.
Can you feed a fox in Minecraft?
Yes. Sweet berries can be offered to a fox. If it is carrying an item, it may drop that item and pick up the berry instead. Feeding is not the same as breeding: foxes can find and eat food on their own, but the player-facing breeding action is to feed berries to two foxes.

For breeding, give sweet berries or glow berries to two foxes. They produce a kit. Mojang says the kit will not run away from the player who bred it, though it may still follow adult foxes when they flee. A lead can help keep it close.
Why do foxes carry items in their mouths?
Foxes use Minecraft’s mob equipment system. Gameplay Designer Cory Scheviak explained that an item in a fox’s “main hand” is shown in its mouth, which lets the fox eat food it picks up. The same system means a weapon can affect its attack: a fox holding a diamond sword can use that weapon’s damage when it attacks prey. This is an equipment-system side effect, not the fox deliberately wielding a weapon like a player.

Do fox diet details differ by edition?
The broad behavior—hunting, picking up items, and eating food it carries—is described in Mojang’s player-facing guide. The detailed behavior reference linked above is specifically for Bedrock, and its format version, 1.17.10, identifies the behavior-pack schema rather than the current game version. The sources do not establish that every diet or targeting detail is identical across current Java and Bedrock releases.
