The game is not added to their library unless they accept it. Steam documents these direct notifications; it does not establish that a gift is automatically posted to the recipient’s public profile or announced to their friends.
What the recipient sees when the gift arrives
- An email: Steam sends the recipient an email with a link to redeem the game, your personal message, and redemption instructions. The email arrives when the gift is delivered, including on the scheduled date if you chose one. See Steam Support’s Steam Gifts FAQ.
- A Steam notification: Steam also shows a gift notification in the Steam client. This is a direct notice to the recipient, not evidence of a public post or an announcement to all their friends.
- A choice to accept or decline: The recipient opens the gift and chooses whether to accept it. Until accepted, the game is not in their library.
Does Steam tell them who sent it?
Yes. Steam says the email includes a personal message from you, so the recipient can see who sent the gift and any note you wrote. The gift notification also alerts them that a gift is waiting. Steam’s support page confirms the email and message; it does not specify every detail of how the sender is displayed in every notification or email configuration.

Will the gift appear on their profile or notify their friends?
Steam’s documented gift flow confirms an email to the recipient and a notification in the Steam client. It does not say that the gift automatically appears as a public profile post or that the recipient’s friends are notified. Treat the documented notice as private to the recipient rather than assuming a public announcement.
What happens when they accept, decline, or do nothing?
If they accept
The game is added to their Steam library after they accept the gift. Steam says only new purchases can be gifted, and some titles do not offer gift checkout; availability can also depend on regional restrictions. Check the specific title’s Steam checkout options.

If they decline
Steam automatically processes a refund to the purchaser, and emails the purchaser about the decline.
If they do nothing
The recipient has 30 days after delivery to accept. If they take no action during that period, Steam cancels the gift purchase and refunds the original payment method.

Can you schedule when the gift arrives?
Yes. Steam lets the purchaser schedule delivery up to 12 months after purchase. The recipient’s email with a redemption link arrives on the scheduled delivery date, rather than when the purchase is made. These timing rules are stated in Steam Support’s Steam Gifts FAQ.
Does a private game setting hide the gift?
Steam’s Private Games feature controls visibility of selected games’ ownership and activity to other users. A private game does not appear on the owner’s Community profile games list or recently played section, and its ownership, playtime, in-game status, and activity are hidden from other users. Steam also says friends may not see the owner as already owning that game when trying to gift it. These settings concern game ownership and activity visibility; Steam’s documentation does not say they suppress a gift notification after delivery. See Steam Support’s Private Games FAQ.

What if the game cannot be gifted?
Gift availability varies by game, and some titles do not provide a gift option at checkout. Steam recommends a Steam Gift Card as an alternative. Gift card recipients also receive an email and an account notification, while the card gives them Steam credit rather than a specific game. Details are in Steam’s Gifts FAQ.

For eligible multipacks, Steam says an extra copy is delivered as a gift message. In Steam’s direct gifting flow, people who already own the game are filtered out of the possible recipients.
