There is no universal cheaper option: compare your PC’s measured electricity use and any new hardware or backup costs with the full cloud bill—not just a cloud GPU’s hourly rate. As one concrete example, Google Cloud lists a T4 GPU at $0.35 per GPU-hour; running that component for 730 hours works out to $255.50 before the VM, disk, and networking charges. A PC you already own could cost less to run, depending on its actual power draw and your electricity tariff.
Compare the same 24/7 streaming workload
A fair comparison uses the same video, resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and monthly hours for both options. A relaxation video with little movement may not need the same encoding resources as motion-heavy footage, so test the actual content and encoder rather than assuming a GPU is required.
For a simple monthly comparison, use 730 hours as an approximate 30.4-day month. YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and advises testing that the connection can reliably sustain the selected bitrate. Different resolutions and codecs call for different settings.
Calculate your PC’s monthly cost
Electricity
Measure average power draw at the wall while the PC is encoding the actual stream, then apply your electricity tariff:

Monthly electricity cost = (average watts ÷ 1,000) × monthly hours × price per kWh
For example, a PC averaging 50 watts over 730 hours uses 36.5 kWh: 50 ÷ 1,000 × 730. That is an arithmetic example, not a claim about typical PC consumption. Multiply by your own billed price per kWh to estimate the energy cost.
Hardware and operating costs
If you already own a suitable PC, its purchase price is usually a sunk cost for a short-term marginal comparison. If you need to buy or replace hardware for the stream, include a reasonable monthly share of that cost over its useful life. Also count any genuinely incremental internet, backup power, storage, maintenance, and labor costs.

YouTube supports computer-based software encoders; expensive equipment is not required to start. That does not establish that a particular computer will encode your chosen settings reliably, so test it with your real content.

What a cloud VM can cost
Do not treat a GPU rate as the complete bill
Google Cloud lists its T4 GPU at $0.35 per GPU-hour. At 730 hours, the GPU component alone is $255.50. Google’s GPU price listing excludes the VM machine-type charge, disk or image, and networking, and the applicable price and availability depend on region. It points users to its pricing calculator for configuration totals.
That figure is a dated provider price example, not an all-in quote for a 24/7 stream. A cloud estimate should include billed instance runtime, any GPU or other accelerator, disks and images, networking or egress, licenses, and other configured services. Include discounts only if you qualify and can accept their commitment terms or interruption risk.

Idle instances and billing models
A cloud VM that remains in the RUNNING state is billed for uptime even when it is idle. Google Cloud describes a one-minute minimum for resource usage followed by one-second billing increments. AWS On-Demand pricing likewise depends on the chosen instance, operating system, and region; AWS says billing runs from launch until stop or termination, with per-second billing for specified operating systems after the first unit of use. Its instance price may not include EBS, public IPv4, and data-transfer charges.
On-demand capacity avoids a long-term commitment. Spot or preemptible capacity may be discounted, but interruption risk matters for an unattended continuous stream. Provider prices, availability, and applicable charges vary by configuration and region; price the actual machine in the provider’s calculator rather than extrapolating from one line item.

Reliability is part of the cost
YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s bitrate and warns that network disruption may break a live stream. A home setup therefore depends on household power, the ISP, and whether the PC and encoder recover after a restart. A cloud VM changes where the encoding machine runs; it does not guarantee that the video reaches YouTube continuously or that every part of the production path is reliable.

Account for whatever safeguards you actually need—such as backup power, monitoring, or a recovery plan—on either side. Do not assume that a low electricity bill or a low VM line item represents the cost of meeting a particular uptime target.

Build a cost estimate for your situation
- Fix the workload: choose the same video, resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and hours per month for each option. For H.264 1080p30, YouTube’s recommended bitrate is 14 Mbps; test your actual content and connection.
- Measure the PC: record average wall draw while encoding. Apply the electricity formula using your own tariff and the hours you expect to run.
