Clearing a game’s cache deletes temporary files created by the game, launcher, or console, then forces fresh copies to be generated or downloaded. It can fix stale or corrupted temporary data behind launch failures, freezes, connection errors, sync problems, and stuck downloads—but it normally does not delete the game, saved progress, purchases, or achievements.
The important qualification is that “clear cache” is not a universal operation. A platform’s cache command is different from deleting saved data, verifying game files, rebuilding a database, or uninstalling the game.
What is a game cache?
A cache is temporary data stored so a game or launcher does not have to recreate or download the same information repeatedly. Depending on the platform, it may contain:

- Downloaded textures, maps, menus, or live-event assets
- Compiled shaders and other graphics data
- Launcher images, web pages, and account-interface data
- Temporary update, download, matchmaking, or session information
- Files generated while the game starts or loads a level
These files are intended to be replaceable. Your installed game is the main program and content; your save data records your progress. Neither is normally the same thing as a cache.

What happens when you clear it?
- The selected temporary files are removed.
- The game, launcher, or console starts without those cached files.
- It rebuilds them locally or downloads replacement data.
- The first launch may take longer than usual.
You may also see temporary shader-compilation stutter, a small redownload, or a launcher sign-in prompt. Clearing a launcher’s web cache can make its interface reload account and library information, but it does not delete the account.
Clearing cache is a troubleshooting reset, not a general performance upgrade. It will not permanently increase frame rates, improve your internet connection, or turn a hard drive into an SSD.
What problems can clearing cache fix?
It is worth trying when the problem began after an update or when one game or launcher behaves incorrectly while the rest of the system works normally. Possible symptoms include:

- Menus, images, or downloaded content are missing or outdated.
- A live-service game cannot connect or synchronize.
- A launcher displays broken or stale library information.
- An update or download repeatedly stalls.
- The game appears to be using an incomplete or outdated temporary asset.
Epic lists cache clearing among the troubleshooting steps for connection, cloud-synchronization, and launch problems, while Activision and Bungie describe corrupted temporary data as a possible cause of freezes, connectivity issues, and unsuccessful loads. What clearing cache usually does not fix
Use another remedy when the evidence points to:
- A server outage or widespread service failure
- A license, ownership, subscription, or account problem
- An incomplete or damaged installation
- Insufficient storage
- A missing or corrupted save
- An outdated game, console, operating system, or graphics driver
- An incompatible mod, overlay, or background utility
- Overheating, failing storage, or another hardware fault
- A network problem affecting multiple devices
For example, a game that is locked or missing from a library may need license or account troubleshooting, not cache clearing. PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance separates cache and database maintenance from license restoration, system updates, storage checks, and installation repair.

Does clearing cache delete saves, games, or purchases?
Ordinary cache clearing normally does not delete the installed game, save files, DLC, purchases, trophies, or achievements. It also does not delete your online account.
However, read the command carefully. “Saved data,” “local saved data,” “delete everywhere,” and similar options are not ordinary cache clearing. They can remove local progress and, depending on the platform, cloud or synchronized data. Do not select them unless you deliberately intend to delete that data and have confirmed that your cloud saves are synchronized.

If a platform starts a repair, rebuild, or database operation, do not interrupt it. If progress appears missing afterward, stop deleting files and check the signed-in account, user profile, cloud-sync status, and game edition first.
How to clear cache by platform
PlayStation 5
PlayStation’s Safe Mode includes Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, which combines two maintenance functions. To access it:
- Turn off the PS5 completely; do not leave it in Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the console’s power button until you hear the second beep.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Choose the cache-clearing option shown on screen, not a reset or data-deletion option.
- Let the console restart, then test the game.
Rebuild Database is not the same as clearing cache. PlayStation describes rebuilding as creating a new database of console content. It is separate from reinstalling a game, but the options shown in Safe Mode should still be read carefully. Use PlayStation’s current troubleshooting instructions if the labels differ on your system software.

PlayStation 4
PS4 troubleshooting uses Safe Mode, and PlayStation documents Rebuild Database separately from other maintenance and repair options. Because Safe Mode labels and behavior can vary with system software, follow the current instructions on PlayStation Support rather than assuming that every PS4 menu matches the PS5 procedure.

Epic’s Xbox Series X|S procedure is a complete power-cycle-based cache reset:
- Turn off the Xbox.
- Unplug the console and its connected accessories.
- Leave it unplugged for two minutes.
- While it remains unplugged, press and hold the power button.
- Reconnect the power cord.
- Turn on the console and start the game.
This is a procedure described by Epic for Xbox Series X|S, not a universal menu path for every Xbox generation. See Epic’s Xbox instructions.
Xbox One
Xbox One does not provide a dedicated console menu option for clearing the cache according to Activision’s support documentation. A complete shutdown and power cycle may be an appropriate troubleshooting step, but use Xbox Support or the specific game publisher’s current guidance for your model rather than applying Series X|S instructions automatically.
Nintendo Switch
Switch cache clearing is handled through the system settings and may require selecting a user profile. Choose only the command specifically labeled for clearing cache. Do not confuse it with an option that deletes save data. Nintendo’s menu labels can change with system software, so use the current device-specific guidance linked from Epic’s support index or Nintendo Support before proceeding.

Epic Games Launcher on Windows
This clears the Epic Games Launcher’s web cache, not necessarily every cache created by an individual game:
- Exit the Epic Games Launcher. You can right-click its tray icon and choose Exit.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
%localappdata%and press Enter. - Open
EpicGamesLauncher, thenSaved. - Delete these folders if they exist:
webcache,webcache_4147, andwebcache_4430. - Relaunch the launcher.
Not all of the folders will necessarily be present. The official procedure is documented by Epic Games Support.
Epic Games Launcher on macOS
- Exit the Epic Games Launcher.
- In Finder, choose Go → Go to Folder.
- Enter
~/Library/Caches/com.epicgames.EpicGamesLauncher. - Move the
webcachefolder to the Trash. - Relaunch the launcher.
Emptying the Trash is optional. Do not remove unrelated folders from the Library. See Epic’s macOS instructions.
Steam
Steam has several operations that are often incorrectly grouped together:
- Clear Download Cache resets temporary download-related data and may help with stalled downloads.
- Verify integrity of game files checks the installed files and replaces missing or damaged ones.
- Deleting shader or game configuration data is a separate, game- or graphics-driver-specific procedure.
File verification is not merely cache clearing. Use it when the installation itself may be damaged. Steam’s labels and navigation can change, so use the current Steam client instructions; Activision also explains the distinction between clearing temporary data and verifying game files.

Mobile games
Android and iOS handle app caches differently. Android commonly exposes a separate cache option in an app’s storage settings, while iOS does not provide an identical universal control for every game. Do not choose Clear data, delete the app, or remove documents and data unless you understand the save and account consequences. Check the game’s support page first, especially if progress is stored locally.

Use this escalation order:
- Restart the game and then restart the console or computer.
- Install pending game, launcher, graphics-driver, and system updates.
- Check the platform and game service-status pages.
- Confirm that enough storage is available.
- Check the account, license, subscription, and cloud-save status.
- Verify or repair the game files on PC.
- Disable incompatible mods, overlays, and background utilities.
- Reinstall the game if its installation is damaged.
- Contact the game publisher or platform support with the error code, steps that reproduce the problem, and when it occurred.
If the same cache problem returns repeatedly, the underlying cause may be an interrupted update, persistent game bug, failing storage device, permissions problem, incompatible modification, server issue, or platform software fault. Repeatedly clearing the cache is not a substitute for diagnosing that cause.
How often should you clear a game cache?
There is no general schedule. Clear it when troubleshooting a specific symptom or when the game’s official support instructions recommend it. Routine cache clearing is usually unnecessary and can create extra downloads, slower first launches, and temporary shader stutter without providing a lasting benefit.

Clearing a game’s cache removes temporary data so the game, launcher, or console can rebuild it. It is a sensible, generally low-risk first step for stale launch data, freezes, connection problems, sync errors, and stuck downloads—provided you select the actual cache option. It is not a guaranteed fix, a performance booster, or a replacement for file verification, updates, installation repair, or support.
