On Steam, Early Access means a developer is selling a playable game while it is still being developed. It is unfinished, and planned features, completion dates and future updates are not guaranteed. Decide whether the game is worth its price in its current state—not on the assumption that it will become a particular finished product.
What Steam Early Access means
Steam Early Access lets developers sell a game in a playable alpha or beta state while they continue working on it. The game should be playable or usable at the time of purchase; it is not simply a promise to deliver a game later. Steam says its price should be justified by the build available at that time. The label is a notice that the product is unfinished and may change. A developer can describe goals and plans, but Steam warns developers not to promise that the game will be completed, when it will be finished, or that particular planned additions will definitely arrive. Early Access games may stay in the program as long as necessary.
What to expect from an unfinished game
Evaluate what is playable now
Read the store page for a concrete description of the current build: available modes, features and content. Use that description, along with developer updates and the game’s Q&A, to decide whether the experience on offer is worth the price. Steam advises customers to buy based on the current state, not a future that may not be realized. Steamworks: Early Access

Treat plans as intentions, not guarantees
Development goals and expected timelines can help you understand the developer’s direction, but they do not guarantee a particular release date or feature set. A roadmap is not the same as delivered content. Do not count unshipped features as part of the product you are buying.
Updates may affect your progress
Updates can change the game, and Steam’s developer guidance says known risks of save-file breakage should be disclosed. Check recent notices and update history before investing heavily in a save you would not want to lose. Steam’s store-page guidance also describes a stale-update notice when more than 12 months have passed since a qualifying build update or developer update event. That notice is a signal to check for newer information, not proof on its own that development has stopped. Steamworks: Early Access

Leaving Early Access signals a change in expectations
Steam says the label should be removed when a product is feature complete and no longer undergoing significant change. At that point, customers are expected to receive a stable, complete experience. This does not require development or updates to stop, but the label’s removal changes what buyers should reasonably expect. Steamworks: Early Access
How to assess an Early Access game before buying
- Identify what you get today. Look for specific playable modes, features and content in the current-state description rather than relying on broad future promises.
- Judge the current build against the price. Ask whether the game is worth that amount as it exists now; do not assign guaranteed value to planned additions.
- Read the developer’s plans with care. Check stated goals, expected development period, intended differences from the full version and approach to community feedback. Treat them as plans rather than commitments.
- Check recent communication and update risks. Look at developer updates and notices for changes, including any disclosed chance of save-file breakage.
- Confirm which kind of early access is being offered. Steam Early Access is a playable game sold during development. Steam Advance Access is a separate pre-purchase benefit for eligible packages that lets buyers play a full-release game before standard purchasers.
Early Access vs. Advance Access
The similar names refer to different arrangements on Steam. Early Access is an unfinished game available to play while development continues. Advance Access gives qualifying pre-purchasers early play of a full-release game; it is available only during pre-purchase and requires Steam’s involvement. It is not the Early Access program.
