Greninja’s English name is most commonly explained as a blend of grenouille, the French word for “frog,” and “ninja,” which matches the character’s frog-and-ninja design. That explanation is a widely accepted interpretation in Pokémon reference sources, not an official statement from the creators. Its Japanese name, Gekkouga, comes from a different set of word possibilities.

The English name: “grenouille” plus “ninja”

The English name combines two parts. The first is grenouille, French for “frog.” The second is “ninja.” Pokémon Database lists these as the name’s components, and Bulbapedia gives the same reading. Both sources present it as the standard explanation for the English name, and it fits the creature’s appearance: a frog-like Pokémon with a ninja’s stealth and scarf-like styling.

The word blend itself is an inference from the name’s sound and design, though. Neither the games, the animated films, nor the anime have been cited as confirming that the developers built the name this way, so it should be read as the most plausible reading rather than a documented fact.

The Japanese name: Gekkouga

The Japanese name is ゲッコウガ, romanized as Gekkouga. It does not come from the English name’s construction. Bulbapedia proposes two possible wordplay readings for it. The first links geko, a frog’s croak, with Kōga-ryū, a ninja school. The second links gekkō, meaning “moonlight,” with the same ninja reference. Neither reading has been confirmed as the intended origin, so the Japanese name is best described as having several plausible explanations, none of them settled.

Why no official confirmation exists

Pokémon Support has a general position on questions like this one. Its guidance says: “It is the intent of the Pokémon creators that questions that have not already been answered within the video games, animated movies, or TV shows, be left to the imaginations and interpretations of Pokémon fans.” That statement describes the franchise’s overall approach to unanswered origins. It does not address Greninja’s name specifically, so it should not be read as either confirming or denying the English etymology.

English and Japanese names compared

Name Proposed components Status of explanation
Greninja (English) grenouille (“frog”) + “ninja” Commonly accepted in Pokémon reference sources; not confirmed by the creators
Gekkouga (Japanese) geko (“croak”) or gekkō (“moonlight”) + Kōga-ryū Proposed wordplay in Bulbapedia; not confirmed as the intended origin

The two names should not be treated as translations of each other. The English explanation does not account for the Japanese name, and the Japanese wordplay is not a translation of “Greninja.”

How to cite the meaning accurately

  • For the English name, say “commonly explained as grenouille (“frog”) plus “ninja.”
  • For the Japanese name, say “Bulbapedia proposes possible wordplay on geko or gekkō and Kōga-ryū.”
  • Avoid saying the creators confirmed either explanation.

Readers searching for “What does Greninja mean?” or “Why is Greninja called Greninja?” are asking the same question about the English name, so the answer above applies to both phrasings.
