“You are being rate limited” means Discord has temporarily blocked more requests after its systems detected a burst of activity. It is usually a cooldown, not a permanent ban. Stop retrying the blocked action, wait for the relevant cooldown, then try once through an official Discord client.
What does “You are being rate limited” mean?
Discord limits how often certain actions can be requested to help prevent spam, abuse, automated account creation, raids, and service overload. When the system blocks a request, you may see this message. A mistaken or ordinary burst of activity can trigger a limit; it does not by itself prove that you intended to spam or break a rule.
For API users, the equivalent response is generally HTTP 429, “Too Many Requests.” Depending on the request, a limit can apply to a route, a shared resource, an account, a phone-verification flow, a network, or a bot globally. Discord explains its API limits and response fields in its rate-limits documentation and defines HTTP 429 in its status-code documentation.
Is a rate limit the same as a ban?
Usually, no. A rate limit temporarily prevents further requests or actions; it does not automatically mean your account has been permanently banned. It can still stop you logging in, joining a server, verifying a phone number, or sending messages until the relevant restriction clears.

Discord does not publish one cooldown that applies to every consumer action. Phone verification has specific guidance; other app or login limits may not show a universal wait time. A separate Limited Access notice is a different state, not just another name for a rate limit. Discord says that notice may limit actions such as joining servers or starting new direct messages, and provides a “Regain Access Here” route. Follow that route or contact Support rather than assuming an ordinary cooldown will resolve it: Discord Limited Access FAQ.
Why might Discord show the message?
Phone verification
Repeatedly requesting SMS codes or resubmitting a number can trigger a phone-verification cooldown. A “recently used” or rate-limit error is different from a number being already registered or invalid. Discord says a phone number cannot be attached to an existing Discord account at the same time, and landline, VoIP, and burner numbers are not accepted for verification. Its account-verification guide says to wait 24–48 hours for a phone-number rate-limit or recently-used timeout; its phone-error guide covers number-related errors.

Login, sign-up, or recovery
Repeatedly submitting credentials or requesting password-reset or verification messages may generate more requests without fixing the underlying issue. A network’s traffic or a temporary Discord-side problem may also be relevant. Don’t keep trying different passwords; after the cooldown, use Discord’s normal password-reset flow if you need to recover access.

Rapidly trying many invites, submitting invalid invites repeatedly, or joining multiple servers in a short period may lead to a temporary block or additional verification. Discord also lists unusually fast messaging and messaging multiple people who are not friends as possible reasons for verification. These are patterns that can prompt a safety check, not proof of a specific violation. A Discord support-community report about repeated invite requests is one example, not a rule that every invite failure has the same cause.

Client or network context
Discord identifies modified or third-party clients as one possible signal in its verification system. Use the official app or web client while troubleshooting. If you are on a VPN, proxy, or shared school or work network, you can test once on another ordinary, stable connection after waiting. The available official guidance does not establish that changing IP addresses reliably clears a consumer rate limit, so don’t rotate networks or use a VPN to evade the restriction.
What should you do first?
- Stop sending the blocked request. Don’t keep clicking “Resend code,” resubmitting a number, refreshing the login page, testing invites, or cycling between devices. Each retry is another request and can keep you in the same loop.
- Note what happened. Record the action, approximate time, whether one action or all Discord activity is affected, and any other message shown—such as “Verification Required,” “Recently Used,” or “Limited Access.” This context helps distinguish a specific action limit from a different account or verification problem.
- Wait for the applicable period. For phone-verification rate limits, Discord says 24–48 hours. For a developer API response, follow its
retry_aftervalue. For an unspecified consumer error, Discord does not publish a universal timer; wait several hours before one careful retry rather than assuming a particular number of minutes. - Retry once through an official client. Open the updated official Discord app or Discord in a browser, using one stable connection. If verifying a phone, select the correct country code and use a valid mobile number that is not already linked to another Discord account. Submit once; if a code arrives, use the newest one rather than repeatedly requesting another.
- Stop if the same message returns. Don’t restart the retry cycle. Use the relevant troubleshooting path below or contact Discord Support.
How long does Discord rate limiting last?

What if waiting does not fix it?
Check the exact phone error
- Already registered: Discord says a phone number can’t be associated with an existing account at the same time. If it is yours, resolve the association with the other account or ask Support for help.
- Invalid number: Check the country code and formatting, and use a supported mobile number. Discord does not accept landline, VoIP, or burner numbers for verification.
- CAPTCHA will not complete or verification loops: Stop repeating the flow and contact Support. Discord’s verification instructions direct users to Support for unresolved problems.
Separate a client issue from a server-side limit
If the cooldown has passed and the problem appears limited to one app—for example, Discord works in the browser but not in the desktop client—update or restart the app, then consider clearing its cache or reinstalling it. Those are general client troubleshooting steps, not a way to reset a server-side timer. Discord’s troubleshooting guide covers them.

Check for a service incident
If Discord fails for many users or across unrelated features, check Discord Status for a reported incident. Don’t assume an outage from the rate-limit message alone.
Contact Discord Support when the block persists
Use Discord Support if the phone-verification error remains after the stated 24–48-hour wait, a valid number is incorrectly marked as registered, CAPTCHA repeatedly fails, you remain trapped in verification, the error persists across devices and networks, or you believe the account has been accessed without permission. Include the action that triggered the error, when it began, the exact message, and the steps already tried. Support is the escalation route; resolution is not guaranteed.

For bot developers: handle HTTP 429 responses
A 429 is not an instruction to retry immediately. Discord’s API may return a response such as:

}- Honor the server-provided
Retry-Afterheader or JSONretry_aftervalue before retrying. - Track route buckets and distinguish per-route or shared-resource limits from global limits.
- Log status codes and rate-limit headers. Backoff can be an additional safeguard, but it does not replace the server-provided wait.
- Stop retrying invalid requests, including requests with an invalid token or inaccessible resource; repeated invalid requests can create further problems.
- Do not hard-code a presumed universal limit. Discord’s documentation describes a 50 requests-per-second global limit for bots, but warns that limits can change. It also documents a threshold of 10,000 invalid requests per 10 minutes in its API/IP protection context; neither figure is a general consumer-app cooldown.
