YouTube’s RTMP backup server URL is a second destination for sending a live feed. An encoder can send the same content to YouTube’s primary ingestion URL and, if configured for redundant output, to the backup URL as well. That gives YouTube another incoming feed to use if the primary feed fails—but the URL alone does not create redundancy or guarantee an instant, seamless switch.
What the backup server URL is for
A server URL—also called an ingestion URL—is the destination an encoder sends video to. YouTube provides a primary ingestion address and, for supported stream configurations, a separate backup ingestion address. The backup is for a redundant feed, not for viewers to watch directly.
In its Live Streaming API documentation, Google defines backupIngestionAddress as the backup ingestion URL for streaming to YouTube using RTMP, DASH, or HLS. The API says you may simultaneously send to that URL the content you send to ingestionAddress. In other words, the encoder or output workflow must actually publish the second feed; merely having or entering a backup URL does not set up redundancy. YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams
How the URL differs from a stream key and watch link
- Primary server URL: tells the encoder where to send its main live feed.
- Backup server URL: a separate ingestion destination for a second, redundant feed.
- Stream key: the separate credential used in the standard RTMP encoder setup along with the server URL. Follow the values shown for the specific stream in YouTube Studio; don’t treat the backup URL as a second key.
- Watch URL: the viewer-facing page. The backup server URL is not a watch link and does not create a second published watch page.
- Backup encoder: a second encoding/sending setup that can provide the backup feed. YouTube’s failover guidance recommends testing this setup by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network connection and checking whether the player rolls over.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to configure and test a redundant feed
- Open the intended stream’s settings in YouTube Live Control Room. Get the ingestion details for that stream. If you use the API, use that stream’s primary and backup fields rather than copying addresses from another stream.
- Match the destination to the selected protocol. Use the RTMP or RTMPS address for an RTMP-family setup. If the stream is configured for HLS, use the HLS Backup server URL displayed for that stream; it is not interchangeable with an RTMP address.
- Configure your encoder or redundant-output workflow. Send the intended content to the primary address and, if you want redundancy, send a matching feed to the backup address too. Check the encoder’s own documentation for how it handles multiple outputs; the URL does not make a single output publish twice by itself.
- Check the preview and stream health. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed before relying on the setup for a broadcast.
- Rehearse failover. YouTube’s streaming tips say: “For test encoder failover, stop the primary encoder (or unplug its Ethernet cable) and make sure the player rolls over to the backup encoder.” Confirm the behavior in the viewer’s player rather than assuming that the backup address has been accepted. Plan bandwidth and failure separation
Two feeds require capacity for two feeds. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth for the primary stream plus the backup stream, with 20% headroom. It also says the total bitrate of the stream must not exceed available upload capacity. This is YouTube’s operational recommendation, not a guarantee that any particular connection will remain stable. YouTube streaming tips
Consider which failures the backup can—and cannot—address. If both feeds depend on the same encoder, power supply, computer, or internet connection, a fault in that shared component can take out both. A backup feed also cannot preserve the source if the video being sent stops, or protect against a shared upstream internet outage. Separate equipment and network routes may reduce shared points of failure, but they are choices in the overall system design, not properties supplied by the URL.

RTMP, RTMPS, and HLS are not interchangeable
YouTube’s API exposes primary and backup ingestion fields for RTMP, DASH, and HLS, and separate fields for RTMPS. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL; YouTube recommends it as a secure extension. Choose the backup address shown for the stream and protocol you are actually using. YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams · YouTube RTMPS setup
HLS has its own protocol selection and displayed backup address. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments rather than as a continuous stream. Don’t paste an RTMP backup address into an HLS workflow, or reuse an HLS address for an RTMP stream. YouTube HLS setup

Common problems and fixes
- The backup URL is entered, but no backup feed arrives. Check that the encoder or output workflow is configured to send a second feed. Entering a URL alone does not create a second output.
- YouTube does not roll over when the primary feed stops. Verify the backup feed is active and test the failure scenario in the player. YouTube’s guidance is to stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable and check for rollover; it does not promise a particular switchover time or seamless playback.
- The encoder rejects the URL or the stream does not connect. Recheck that the address belongs to the intended stream and matches its protocol—RTMP, RTMPS, or HLS—and pair it with the stream’s correct key where the encoder requires one.
- The primary and backup feeds both become unstable. Check whether the connection can carry their combined bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Look for shared network or equipment failures that affect both outputs.
- There is more delay than expected. Confirm whether the stream uses HLS. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it transmits video segments.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube channel made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a different approach from configuring dual encoder feeds: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded-video looping, not camera streaming or a claim of YouTube backup-ingest redundancy.
