On Summoner’s Rift, the standard five-player lineup consists of top, jungle, mid, bot, and support. A position usually means where a player is assigned on the map; a role can mean that assignment or the champion’s broader job for the team. The labels describe common patterns, not unbreakable rules: picks, drafts, and lane assignments can vary.
What are the five standard positions?
Riot’s beginner guide presents top, jungle, mid, bot, and support as the recommended Summoner’s Rift composition. Each position has a usual area and early-game pattern, but its eventual contribution depends on the champion, matchup, and state of the game. What does top lane do?
Top is the solo lane on the upper side of Summoner’s Rift. Riot describes its champions as tough solo fighters who protect their lane and focus on powerful opponents. In practice, top players manage a one-on-one matchup and look for ways to gain lane advantage; later, they contribute to fights according to their champion’s strengths. There is no single team-fight job shared by every top pick.
As of Patch 26.1, assigned top players have a role quest that progresses through lane activity. Completing it raises the level cap to 20, grants experience and future experience gain, and provides a Teleport-related benefit. What does the jungler do?
The jungler plays between the lanes, clearing neutral camps and responding to opportunities across the map. Pathing—the order and timing of camp clears—depends on the champion and the game state. Junglers may help create pressure in lanes through ganks, while also tracking opportunities to contest major neutral objectives. As of Patch 26.1, jungle quest progression uses the jungle pet system. The patch adjusted Smite, camp interactions, and quest rewards; completing the quest grants movement speed in the jungle and river, plus gold and experience for large monsters. What does mid lane do?
Mid is the central solo lane. Riot describes mid champions as high-burst threats that can contribute alone or alongside the team. Because mid connects to both sides of the map, its player may roam to assist a jungler or another lane—but leaving lane is a decision shaped by the wave, vision, champion, and timing, not an obligation to roam constantly. Riot’s Patch 14.1 design commentary put it this way: “Mid lane, at its core, is a lane that requires some amount of roaming to support junglers or side lanes.” That is dated design commentary, not a guarantee about current balance. What does the bot-lane carry do?
Bot commonly follows a damage-carry pattern: the player relies on gold and experience to grow into a major source of damage. Riot’s beginner guide notes that bot champions can be vulnerable early and powerful after gaining resources. Bot does not always mean marksman, however. As of Patch 26.1, Riot describes bot laners as gold-income carries. The role quest provides upfront and continuing gold, and moves boots to a role-quest slot, freeing an effective item slot. These details apply to that patch’s system and may change. Riot Games’ Patch 26.1 Notes

What does support do?
Support usually partners with the bot-lane carry, contributing through protection, setup, and vision-oriented play. It is a team-enabling position, not simply a second carry with less gold. Supports can also leave bot lane to help elsewhere, but the right timing and extent depend on the match and current balance.
As of Patch 26.1, support quest progress uses World Atlas, with listed benefits for storing and buying control wards. Riot’s Patch 26.16 notes explain that very early support roaming had become common and that Riot adjusted quest progress and particular champions to preserve meaningful lane participation. How do the positions work together?
The five positions divide map assignments, resources, and ways of influencing the game. Solo lanes typically develop through their lane matchups; bot and support share a lane, with the carry commonly prioritized for gold and experience; and the jungler moves among camps, lanes, and neutral-objective contests. These are broad patterns rather than a fixed script. A useful way to understand any position is to consider its map assignment, resource pattern, matchup, likely fight contribution, and ability to move around the map.
Position assignments also matter in current role-quest systems. For queues with assigned positions, Patch 26.1 assigned a quest to the selected role. Top, mid, and bot received lane-phase quests, with progress from actions such as minion kills, takedowns, plates, and turrets—and extra progress for actions in the assigned lane. Jungle and support retained quest systems based on pets and World Atlas, respectively. Professional drafts do not always preserve the standard lane matchup. Riot’s 2026 role-quest notes discuss position assignment, lane swaps, and incentives to play the assigned lane, illustrating why the five-position framework should not be mistaken for a promise that every game follows one arrangement.
