What Encoder Profile and Level Should I Use for YouTube Live?

YouTube Live does not require a universal H.264 profile or level. Use a compatible encoder preset, follow YouTube’s documented bitrate and keyframe settings, and test before going live.

Short answer: YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance does not require a particular H.264 profile or level. Use a compatible preset recommended by your encoder’s manufacturer, leave the level at a compatible default unless that encoder’s documentation says otherwise, and test your stream. YouTube does specify other important settings, including CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame rate.

Does YouTube require H.264 High or Main Profile?

No universal H.264 profile requirement appears in YouTube’s live encoder guidance. YouTube lists supported codecs and live-stream parameters but does not prescribe a profile or level. The Live Control Room detects the encoder settings and transcodes the feed into formats for viewers. That detection and transcoding do not make a particular profile or level a published platform requirement. YouTube’s live encoder settings

A manufacturer may document a recommendation for a specific device. For example, the AJA HELO v4.2r1 manual recommends H.264 Main Profile as that encoder’s factory default. That is device-specific advice, not a YouTube-wide rule. Follow your encoder’s documented YouTube-compatible preset if it has one; do not assume that every encoder should use Main, High, or another profile.

What H.264 level should I set?

YouTube’s live encoder page does not name a required H.264 level. If your encoder exposes a level field, keep its compatible default unless that encoder’s documentation gives you a reason to change it. YouTube’s published live settings cannot establish one level that is right for every resolution, frame rate, and encoder.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not use YouTube’s video-upload recommendations as a substitute for live-ingest settings: uploaded files and live encoder feeds are different workflows. If changing a profile or level causes an encoder warning or stream failure, restore the encoder’s documented compatible preset and validate with a test stream.

Use the live settings YouTube does publish

For an SDR H.264 stream over RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s recommended advanced settings include progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube’s encoder settings

  • HDR: YouTube’s HDR guidance names H.265 and 10-bit depth; AV1 is not supported for HDR in that guidance.

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that every encoder labels or exposes each control identically. Match the corresponding settings available in your encoder and consult its manual for device-specific fields.

Choose bitrate for resolution and frame rate

YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations are listed below. They are ingest bitrate recommendations, not measurements of a particular creator’s connection. Choose the row matching your output and ensure your upload connection can sustain it; YouTube recommends checking upload capacity with a speed test. YouTube’s live bitrate table

These figures are published on YouTube’s live settings page, which does not state a publication year for the table. They are recommended settings, not a reason to choose a resolution your encoder or uplink cannot sustain. A stable lower-resolution stream is more useful than a higher-resolution feed that repeatedly drops frames.

Set up and validate an H.264 stream

  1. Choose the output. Select a resolution and frame rate your game capture, encoder, and upload connection can handle. Use YouTube’s bitrate table to set a matching H.264 target.
  2. Set the documented ingest options. Choose H.264, CBR, progressive scan, a two-second keyframe interval, and the recommended advanced settings your encoder exposes. Use a compatible encoder profile and level; do not treat either as a YouTube-mandated value.
  3. Connect to YouTube. Use RTMPS if supported and configure the stream key in the encoder according to its interface. Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  4. Run a test before the event. Include representative gameplay movement and audio. Check that the preview appears, the selected resolution and frame rate are detected as expected, and the stream-health indicators and messages show no unresolved issue. YouTube says to test before starting a live stream. Live encoder settings
  5. Monitor the live control room. YouTube detects resolution and frame rate by default; manual selection is available with a custom stream key. Check stream health and messages during the broadcast. At 2160p/4K, YouTube says low-latency improvement is unavailable and the stream uses normal latency. YouTube latency and encoder guidance

Fix common profile, level, and stream problems

  • Your encoder asks for a profile or level, but YouTube’s page does not name one. Keep the encoder’s compatible default or use its documented YouTube preset. Test the exact output before relying on it for an event.
  • The encoder reports an unsupported or incompatible setting. Restore its manufacturer’s recommended preset, then verify codec, resolution, frame rate, and other exposed parameters. A profile recommendation for one hardware model should not be copied as a platform rule.
  • The feed stutters or drops frames. Check that the uplink can sustain the selected bitrate. If not, lower the output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate together as appropriate, then run another test rather than repeatedly changing profile or level without evidence.
  • YouTube does not show the expected output format. Check the source resolution and frame rate in the encoder and allow the Live Control Room’s detection to identify them. If you need manual selection, YouTube says that is possible with a custom stream key.
  • A 4K stream does not offer improved low latency. This is expected in YouTube’s guidance: 2160p streams use normal latency.
