PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS has an announced Unreal Engine 5 development project, but PUBG has not confirmed that the migration has shipped or given a new release date. The March 2025 roadmap described the work as pre-production. In March 2026, the team said the project could not be a simple engine port and that it had revised plans and tasks. The official roadmaps reviewed do not identify the exact engine version in the current live PC or console build.
What engine does PUBG use right now?
The available official roadmaps do not confirm the precise engine version running the current live PC or console versions of PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS. KRAFTON announced a future move to Unreal Engine 5 in 2024, but an announced project is not proof that the live game has already transitioned.

Is PUBG moving to Unreal Engine 5?
Yes. The PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS team described UE5 adoption as a project in its March 18, 2025 roadmap. At that point, the team said the work was in pre-production. It identified a visual upgrade as the first noticeable change, with the broader aims of improving graphic quality and creating a more scalable development environment. The roadmap described features and systems arriving gradually, rather than in a single all-at-once change.

The team presented the work as a technology step intended to preserve PUBG’s recognizable experience, not as a wholly new PUBG game. These were stated goals, not confirmation of delivered changes or measured improvements.
When is PUBG getting UE5?
There is no confirmed UE5 release date in the official roadmaps reviewed. The March 23, 2026 roadmap says the team concluded that “this cannot just be a simple engine port.” It reports that plans were partly revised and tasks redefined; some service plans that had been associated with the game’s 2027 tenth anniversary were also adjusted. The roadmap does not provide a replacement date for the UE5 project.

The 2025 roadmap cautioned that plans and timelines could change. The 2026 update confirms that the plan changed, so earlier targets should not be treated as a guaranteed launch window. The 2026 announcement also does not specify the project’s current stage or say that UE5 has entered the live game.

How the console transition differs from the UE5 project
PUBG also discussed a move from legacy console hardware to current-generation Xbox and PlayStation service. The 2025 roadmap described legacy hardware constraints affecting loading speeds, frame rate, graphics quality, and memory use, and planned a transition for late 2025. In its 2026 roadmap, the team said the transition occurred in 2025 and that many hardware limitations were reduced.

That console service transition and the UE5 development project are separate initiatives in the roadmaps. The console transition addressed hardware constraints and service quality; UE5 was described as a broader technology and development step. The console update does not establish that the UE5 migration has shipped. The roadmaps provide no controlled UE5 benchmark comparison or quantified performance results.

The clearest confirmed picture is a project with evolving plans, not a dated upgrade promise. PUBG has stated goals for visual quality and development scalability, but has not published a new ship date, the current live-build engine version, or detailed technical plans for the revised work. Treat future timing and feature details as unconfirmed until PUBG announces them.
