Before buying anything else, ask the coach or club whether it supplies a ball and what footwear suits its surface. Gloves are optional; corner masks and goalkeeper equipment are for specific roles.
What to get first
- Field hockey stick: Essential. Choose a length the player can handle comfortably.
- Mouthguard: Get one for regular game play, and check the program’s rules and fit requirements.
- Field hockey shin guards: Standard protection for field players in games; confirm what the coach or league requires.
- Footwear: Check the playing surface and local rules before buying turf shoes or cleats.
A personal ball is useful for practice but may not be necessary if the team provides one. Gloves are optional. Defensive corner masks and goalkeeper kit are role-specific rather than part of a beginner field player’s basic shopping list.
How to choose a beginner stick
USA Field Hockey says beginner sticks are usually wooden, lightweight, less rigid, and more forgiving when learning to stop and control the ball. A beginner does not need to buy a composite stick simply because it may offer a different feel or power. Prioritize fit and handling over price or material upgrades.

The guide also describes hip-bone height as a rough measurement. A stick that is too long can be hard to maneuver; one that is too short may feel awkward and limit power. Ask a coach, manufacturer, or retailer to help check fit before investing. USA Field Hockey says there is no left-handed stick.
What changes between a first session and a game?
Requirements depend on the activity. USA Field Hockey’s FUNdamental Field Hockey curriculum says most PE classes and introductory sessions do not require shin guards or mouthguards, particularly when using a GO Ball, though those items may be optional in that setting. The curriculum identifies shin guards and mouthguards as standard for field players in official games. Follow the coach’s or organizer’s stated requirements even at an introductory session.

The GO Ball is oversized and lighter than a typical ball. The curriculum says it rolls better on long grass and more slowly on hard surfaces such as a gym floor or parking lot. Ask which ball the program supplies and whether it expects players to bring a particular kind for practice.
Optional and role-specific equipment
- Gloves: Optional. Players may wear them for hand protection, grip, or warmth.
- Corner mask: Used by defenders while defending penalty corners, not worn as general field-player kit.
- Goalkeeper equipment: A separate, extensive protective kit. It is not part of a beginner field player’s equipment list.
When choosing protective gear, consider fit, comfort, and coverage. FIH guidance says protective equipment should address ordinary risks without creating risks for other players; it does not establish a specific product model or certification recommendation here.

Check your club’s rules and playing surface
USA Field Hockey’s equipment guide is written for a US audience, and local clubs, schools, and competitions may add requirements. A local youth program, for example, lists footwear and socks as part of its own equipment guidance; its age bands, sock colors, and footwear list should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
For official outdoor competition, consult the rules for the player’s format and location. The FIH rules page states that the outdoor rules published in March 2026 took effect in March 2026. Introductory programs and local organizers may have separate instructions.

A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Ask whether the session is an introductory activity, a practice, or an official game, and what protective gear it requires.
- Confirm the stick length with the player’s height and handling, using the chart as a guide.
- Ask whether the team supplies balls and what kind is used on its surface.
- Check which shoes are allowed and suitable for the venue before buying dedicated footwear.
- Buy role-specific equipment only if the player will be defending penalty corners or playing goalkeeper.
