There is no single piece of equipment called “special-effects equipment.” For film and television, effects may be physical, mechanical, or chemical processes created on camera; theatre and live events also use atmospheric machines such as foggers and hazers. The right equipment depends on the effect and setting, so this guide distinguishes those categories rather than treating them as interchangeable.
What counts as special-effects equipment?
In screen production, special effects can involve physical, mechanical, or chemical processes that create elements on camera. In theatre and live production, the term also covers equipment that changes the environment, such as machines that produce fog or haze. Immersive cinema may add motion seating and environmental effects, which are a separate experience from effects created for the camera.

This is a practical grouping, not a universal or exhaustive classification. Rosco’s effects equipment range includes fog and haze products. A commercial Dubai event-rental provider, for example, lists smoke and haze, pyrotechnics, confetti, and CO2 effects; that listing describes its own service, not general availability everywhere.

Fog and haze: match the machine, fluid, and result
A fogger and its fluid work as a system. Rosco says its Vapour machine is compatible with Rosco fog fluids. Its Stage & Studio Fog Fluid is intended for quickly dissipating or low-lying effects when used with Rosco fog machines and Coldflow. Check the exact machine instructions and fluid compatibility before use; fluid intended for one setup should not be assumed suitable for another.
Example: Rosco Vapour
Rosco describes the Vapour as a professional fog machine with timed remote operation and an integrated DMX interface. Its published specifications are 1200 W; 10.9 A at 110 V AC/60 Hz or 5.2 A at 230 V AC/50 Hz; and maximum fluid consumption of 3.6 liters per hour. These are manufacturer specifications, not a general measure of fog-machine performance. Rosco also says the machine was tested for professional theatrical productions and complies with AMPTP Safety Bulletin #10. Consult the manufacturer’s product information and current manual for the particular unit and production conditions.

How to choose an effects path
- Define the result and setting. Decide whether you need an on-camera physical effect, atmospheric fog or haze, or a live-event effect such as confetti or CO2.
- Check the production requirements. For atmospheric equipment, compare control, output, power, and fluid compatibility against the venue and the intended effect. For other effects, identify the specific operational and safety needs before choosing equipment.
- Decide whether to rent or own. A one-off event may be better served by a local professional rental provider; availability and services depend on location. An ongoing production may have different equipment and staffing needs.
- Plan safety and operation. Use qualified production personnel for hazardous or technically demanding effects, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable local requirements.
Why the effect matters more than the label
The same broad label can describe very different tools: a fog machine changes the atmosphere, mechanical effects create physical elements on camera, and event effects may involve pyrotechnics or other specialist equipment. Theatre has long treated effects as constructed illusions; a technical-theatre handbook attributes the line “Effects are illusion and illusion is trickery” to Richard Pilbrow, author of Stage Lighting. The handbook is an older educational source, so the quotation is best read as a theatrical principle, not equipment guidance.
