In a December 2024 interview, he called her “a sort of sisterly character pulling Cloud along and encouraging him”—a description of her supportive role in a particular scene, not a definitive ruling on their relationship. He later said the creators would leave relationships to the game’s content rather than make official declarations about who likes whom.
What did Hamaguchi mean by “sisterly”?
Hamaguchi used the phrase while discussing Rebirth’s additional scenes, including Cloud and Aerith’s date in an alternate timeline. He said players could interpret what the scene meant in different ways, then described Aerith as “this sort of sisterly character pulling Cloud along and encouraging him.” He also said she was sensing what was coming and understanding her fate. Inverse published the interview on December 18, 2024.

In context, “sisterly” characterizes how Aerith encourages and guides Cloud in Hamaguchi’s account of the scene. The quote does not say that all of Aerith’s feelings for Cloud are platonic, nor does it settle how players should read their relationship.
What else did the interview say about Cloud’s relationships?
Immediately after Hamaguchi’s answer, series producer Yoshinori Kitase remarked: “Cloud’s thought of deeply by two different women. What a lucky guy.” That adjacent comment is further reason not to treat the “sisterly” line as a definitive declaration closing the question of Cloud and Aerith’s relationship. The comment appears in the same Inverse interview.

Did Hamaguchi clarify his position later?
Yes. In an interview reported by AUTOMATON on January 23, 2025, Hamaguchi said: “As creators, we don’t talk about characters’ romantic relationships unless it’s through the content.” He added that the creators would continue conveying relationships through their work and that “no-one will make any official statements about who Cloud likes, who Aerith likes, and so on.” Read AUTOMATON’s report.
GameSpot also reported the point the following day: Hamaguchi said no one would make official statements about who Cloud or Aerith likes. GameSpot’s January 24, 2025 report corroborates that account.

What can players conclude about Aerith and Cloud?
The clearest supported reading is limited: Hamaguchi called Aerith “sisterly” while describing her as encouraging Cloud in the alternate-timeline scene. His later comments explicitly place romantic interpretation in the content rather than in official creator statements. Whether players see Aerith’s feelings as romantic is therefore not answered by that quote alone.
That distinction matters because Rebirth invites interpretation of scenes and relationships rather than offering a director’s verdict in this interview. The game follows Cloud and his companions beyond Midgar, as Square Enix’s game overview describes; the relevant evidence about this specific statement remains the surrounding interview context and Hamaguchi’s subsequent clarification.
