But 1933 is not a settled, stand-alone invention date: the game’s history reaches back to Elizabeth Magie’s The Landlord’s Game, while Charles Darrow’s version and Parker Brothers’ role are tied to milestones in 1934 and 1935.
Why Monopoly is the usual answer
Monopoly is the familiar game associated with the question. The Strong National Museum of Play traces its commercial history to Charles Darrow, while the Smithsonian identifies an earlier foundation in Magie’s The Landlord’s Game. Those accounts make “invented in 1933” a shorthand, not a date that captures the whole story. The Strong National Museum of Play and the Smithsonian National Museum of American History describe the game’s origins and lineage.
The key dates in Monopoly’s history
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 1904 | Elizabeth Magie received a patent for The Landlord’s Game, a major predecessor to Monopoly, according to the Library of Congress. |
| 1934 | The Strong says Darrow produced the first commercial version. The Library of Congress says he presented his game to Parker Brothers that year and was rejected. These are distinct milestones: making a commercial version and pitching it to a publisher. |
| 1935 | The Smithsonian says Darrow patented and sold his board game to Parker Brothers. PBS’s American Experience recounts the company’s acquisition in March and the start of production that year. |

Who invented Monopoly?
It is misleading to credit Darrow alone with inventing the complete game. Magie’s patented The Landlord’s Game came decades earlier and is part of Monopoly’s documented lineage. The Library of Congress discusses the dispute over credit, and the UK Intellectual Property Office also recognizes Magie’s role in the game’s history.

That does not make the two games identical or settle every detail of how Monopoly’s rules and board developed. The available accounts distinguish Magie’s predecessor from Darrow’s later version and its commercial publication; they do not establish exactly when every intermediate board or rule set took its final form. See the UK Intellectual Property Office and the British Library for further historical context.

The date in the question points readers toward Monopoly, but the institutional accounts cited here attach documented milestones to 1934 and 1935, and trace the game’s roots to 1904. They do not establish one universally agreed event in 1933 as the invention of Monopoly. “Invented” can refer to a predecessor, a later version, a patent, a publisher’s acquisition, or a commercial release; those are not interchangeable.
