Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBring a complete set of goalie gear that you already know fits, and confirm with the team’s equipment staff what it expects you to bring and what it will provide. There is no published NHL call-up packing list in the sources available here, so the checklist below is practical guidance—not an official league requirement.
What to have ready
Prepare the equipment you rely on to play, along with personal items that affect fit and readiness. Check the club’s instructions before you travel or make last-minute substitutions.
- Leg pads
- Goalie pants
- Chest and arm protector
- Blocker and catching glove
- Approved mask
- Goalie skates and stick
- Neck and throat protection, as required by current rules and team policy
- Jock or jill, base layers, and underlayers that work with the team’s jersey
- Spare laces, tape, and personal fit adjustments
This is a readiness checklist, not a declaration that every item is mandatory or that a recalled goalie must supply every item personally. The available league sources do not establish whether a club provides a mask, pads, or other personal gear.
Why familiar fit matters
Do not assume equipment is interchangeable because the label shows the same size. NHL Rule 11 treats goalie fit as individual, and league reporting describes chest and arm protection as needing to be anatomically proportional and size-specific. Bring the gear you know works for you, then have the team’s equipment staff review it.

What the rules say about sizing
The NHL’s 2025–26 Official Rules, Rule 11.2, state that leg pads must be anatomically proportional and size-specific. That edition sets an 11-inch maximum extreme width and gives the League discretion over maximum height based on an individual goalie’s measurements. The rule also includes construction requirements, so a single dimension is not a complete compliance check.
NHL.com’s account of the NHL and NHLPA’s 2018 chest-and-arm-pad rule likewise says the protector must be anatomically proportional and size-specific. The current 2026–27 rulebook is linked from NHL.com, but its exact equipment wording has not been verified here; check the current-season text rather than assuming the 2025–26 provisions remain unchanged.

Call-up readiness and emergency backups
NHL.com reported on October 2, 2026, that every team is required to have an emergency backup goalie on its roster for the 2026–27 season. The report says that this rostered emergency backup dresses with the team, wears No. 00, and practices and travels with it. Those details describe the rostered emergency-backup role; they should not be treated as rules for every injury recall or contracted NHL goalie.
The same report lists eligibility limits for rostered emergency backups: no NHL game under a standard player contract, no more than 80 professional games, and no professional hockey in the previous three seasons. These are eligibility conditions for that role, not a gear checklist.

What to confirm with the club
- Ask the team’s equipment staff what it expects you to bring and what, if anything, it will supply.
- Confirm that your equipment fits you, is in playing condition, and is acceptable under the current-season rules and team policy.
- Follow the club’s current instructions for arrival, dressing, equipment checks, and any required paperwork.
A 2020 NHL report described an emergency backup as eligible to play for either team and said a called EBUG signed an amateur tryout contract before going on the ice. That is historical process context, not complete current contract guidance; rely on the team for current instructions.
