GOG’s Preservation Program is a support commitment for selected games: GOG says it tests and improves those releases and will devote resources to keeping them compatible with modern and future systems. It does not promise that every title will run flawlessly on every device forever. GOG’s DRM-free releases and offline installers give buyers practical control over downloaded copies, but buying a game does not transfer its copyright.
What the Preservation Program actually promises
GOG introduced the program on 13 November 2024 as an official label for classic games that it has improved. The company says membership means it commits its own resources to maintaining a game’s compatibility with modern and future systems. Participating games receive extensive quality testing and often custom compatibility or quality-of-life improvements. GOG’s announcement describes an ongoing support effort, not a legal warranty or a guarantee of flawless performance on every hardware and operating-system configuration.
GOG’s stated expectations also cover work on popular current and future PC configurations, technical support, and an edition it considers the best and most complete available. That can include compatibility work, manuals, bonus content, DLC, or features missing from other editions; the exact contents depend on the game. The announcement does not say that every title has been rebuilt from source code.
Does the badge cover every GOG game?
No. The badge applies to selected titles, not the whole store. When accessed on 3 October 2026, GOG’s live Preservation Program catalog displayed 305 games and 1,685 game improvements. Those are changing catalog-page totals, not permanent measures of how well games work or how long they will be supported.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do you own games you buy on GOG?
You can keep and use a downloaded copy under GOG’s agreement, but you do not acquire the game’s copyright or a general right to redistribute it. GOG’s User Agreement says game content is owned by developers or publishers and licensed by GOG, and describes permitted personal use alongside restrictions on activities such as unauthorized distribution. In plain terms, control of a copy is different from ownership of the intellectual property in the game.
Can you play GOG games offline?
GOG says its games should work without Galaxy authentication, the Galaxy client, or an internet connection for ordinary offline play. Its developer documentation also notes that features dependent on online services—such as multiplayer, friends, or leaderboards—cannot be available offline. A DRM-free label therefore removes a launcher or online check as a requirement for play; it does not make online-dependent features work without a connection.

How offline installers help with backups
GOG says customers retain access to offline installers and can safeguard them as they choose. You can download the installer files and store a copy on local or external storage if you want an additional backup. This is optional: the benefit is having files you can keep, rather than relying only on a launcher to install the game.
GOG’s offline-installer documentation says installers are generated from published builds. After a post-launch build update, generating a new installer can take several hours, so a newly published update may not be reflected immediately in the downloadable installer. A stored installer is a copy of the build it contains; it does not update itself.
