The AMD Radeon RX 6700 10GB is the closest practical PC equivalent to the base PS5. It shares the PS5 GPU’s 36-compute-unit RDNA 2 class and lands in the same broad raster-performance range in matched game testing. Nvidia alternatives are best described as a range: the RTX 2070 Super and RTX 3060 Ti are nearby performance references, while the RTX 3060 is generally weaker. The RX 6700 XT is faster than the base PS5, and newer cards such as the RX 9060 XT and RTX 5060 class are upgrades rather than equivalents.
Quick answer
| GPU | Relationship to the base PS5 | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Radeon RX 6700 10GB | Closest overall hardware and performance analogue | Closest used-equivalent target |
| Radeon RX 6700 XT | Faster than the PS5 | PS5-like PC with extra headroom |
| GeForce RTX 2070 Super | Similar historical raster-performance class | Used Nvidia alternative |
| GeForce RTX 3060 Ti | Strong Nvidia-side comparison, but not an exact match | Used Nvidia alternative |
| GeForce RTX 3060 | Usually below the closest PS5-equivalent tier | Only when substantially cheaper |
| GeForce RTX 4060 | Similar class in some games, with lower power use | Newer 8GB Nvidia option |
| Radeon RX 9060 XT | Generally faster than the base PS5 | New 2026 build or upgrade |
“Equivalent” here means comparable real-world gaming performance, not identical silicon. No retail PC card reproduces the PS5’s complete console platform.
What is inside the base PS5?
Sony specifies a custom AMD Radeon RDNA 2-based graphics engine with hardware ray-tracing acceleration, a variable GPU frequency up to 2.23GHz and 10.3 teraflops of FP32 compute. The console has 16GB of unified GDDR6 memory at 448GB/s, an eight-core/16-thread Zen 2 CPU, and a high-speed 825GB SSD. These specifications are listed by Sony at Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The 16GB figure is shared by the CPU, GPU and operating system. A desktop graphics card’s VRAM is dedicated to the GPU, while the PC has separate system memory, so a PC does not need a 16GB graphics card simply because the PS5 has 16GB of unified memory.

Why the RX 6700 is the closest match
The RX 6700 is an unusually close analogue because it is also a 36-compute-unit RDNA 2 design with 10GB of GDDR6. That makes its architectural class, memory capacity and intended raster workload unusually similar to the base PS5’s graphics hardware.
It is still not the same component. Sony’s GPU is custom silicon with console-specific power, memory, firmware and API behavior. Clock behavior, usable memory, driver overhead and game optimization differ between the two platforms. The RX 6700 should therefore be called the closest practical equivalent, not “the PS5 GPU.”
What real-game testing shows
Digital Foundry’s matched-settings comparison is the most useful practical evidence for the RX 6700 conclusion. It examines the PS5 and PC versions of The Last of Us Part I, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Alan Wake 2, Hitman 3, Monster Hunter Rise, Cyberpunk 2077 and A Plague Tale: Requiem, with additional 1080p and Nvidia comparisons. Watch the test at Digital Foundry’s comparison video.
The comparison is valuable because it considers actual game output rather than treating teraflops as interchangeable. The PS5 frequently changes internal resolution to hold a frame-rate target, while the PC test uses specified settings and resolutions. Upscaling, ray tracing, patches and frame-time behavior can therefore change the result from one game to another. There is no honest single FPS number that represents every title.
- Console modes may use dynamic resolution and temporal reconstruction.
- PC presets can combine settings that do not map exactly to a console mode.
- Different PC ports can have different shader-compilation, streaming and CPU behavior.
- A fixed native 1440p PC render can be heavier than a console image reconstructed from a lower internal resolution.
Nvidia equivalents: RTX 2070 Super, 3060 Ti, 3060 and 4060
Nvidia comparisons should be expressed as a performance range. The RTX 2070 Super is a familiar historical PS5 reference. The RTX 3060 Ti is the strongest modern Nvidia-side comparison for rasterized games, while the RTX 3060 generally sits below that tier. The RTX 4060 can be close in aggregate results and uses less power, but its 8GB memory and 128-bit interface make it a less direct match.

Tom’s Hardware’s current raster hierarchy reports the following aggregate PC results, measured without upscaling or frame generation:
| GPU | 1080p Ultra | 1440p Ultra | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radeon RX 6700 XT | 79.2 FPS | 54.3 FPS | Above the PS5-equivalent class |
| GeForce RTX 3060 Ti | 74.2 FPS | 51.0 FPS | Closest Nvidia performance class |
| GeForce RTX 4060 | 71.5 FPS | 47.6 FPS | Similar class, newer and more efficient |
| Radeon RX 7600 | 69.9 FPS | 45.4 FPS | Nearby but not an exact PS5 match |
| GeForce RTX 3060 12GB | 61.5 FPS | 41.9 FPS | Usually below the 3060 Ti tier |
These are aggregate PC benchmark results, not PS5 frame rates, so they establish relative PC ranking rather than console equivalence. See the full methodology and hierarchy at Tom’s Hardware.

RX 6700 versus RX 6700 XT
The RX 6700 XT is often named as the PS5 equivalent because it is more common and easy to identify, but it is an upper-side match. AMD lists 40 compute units, 12GB of GDDR6, 13.21 FP32 teraflops, 384GB/s memory bandwidth and 230W typical board power for the XT model, with a recommended 650W power supply. The official specifications are at AMD’s RX 6700 XT page.
Compared with the PS5’s 36 compute units and 10.3 teraflops, the XT has more shader resources and substantially more theoretical compute. It is a sensible replacement if the used-market price is attractive, but it should be described as PS5-plus performance, not the closest one-for-one equivalent.
Should you buy a newer GPU in 2026?
If you are building a new PC, do not pay an inflated price for an old card merely because it carries a “PS5 equivalent” label. Current entry-level and midrange cards are generally faster and offer newer features.

RTX 5060-class cards
An RTX 5060-class card is also a modern alternative with Nvidia’s current software features. It should be evaluated as a faster replacement for a PS5-class GPU, not as a literal console duplicate. Compare actual street price, memory capacity and the games you play rather than relying on the “equivalent” label.
How to choose by use case
Closest technical match
Choose an RX 6700 10GB when you can find one in good condition at a genuinely low used price. An RX 6650 XT or RX 6600 XT is somewhat weaker; an RX 6700 XT is faster.
Closest Nvidia option
Target an RTX 3060 Ti or RTX 2070 Super for the nearest Nvidia performance class. Treat the RTX 4060 as a newer, lower-power alternative, not an architectural match. Treat the RTX 3060 as borderline unless its price is clearly lower.

Best new purchase
Start with the RX 9060 XT 16GB or a competitively priced RTX 5060-class card. These products exceed base-PS5 performance and provide more current platform support. Value depends on live retail pricing, warranty and power requirements.
Ray tracing priority
There is no exact ray-tracing equivalent. Nvidia cards can have an advantage in some ray-traced workloads, while a console game may use custom optimization and conservative effects. A GPU that matches PS5 raster performance is not guaranteed to match it with ray tracing enabled.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a PC GPU cannot match PS5 performance perfectly
Dynamic resolution and reconstruction
Many PS5 performance modes vary internal resolution to maintain a target frame rate. A PC set to fixed native 1440p or 4K may render more pixels and appear slower even when its GPU is broadly comparable.
CPU and system balance
The PS5’s custom Zen 2 CPU is part of a fixed platform. Pairing a PS5-class GPU with an old or entry-level desktop CPU can create a CPU bottleneck, especially at 1080p. System RAM, SSD speed, Windows overhead and driver behavior also affect frame times.

Unified console memory is managed across CPU and GPU workloads. Dedicated PC VRAM cannot be compared directly with the PS5’s full 16GB pool, and some console memory is reserved for the operating system and other tasks.

Ray tracing and game settings
Console developers select a fixed mix of resolution, effects and frame-rate targets. PC versions expose more combinations, and equivalent-looking presets may use different shadow, reflection or volumetric settings.
Port quality
Shader stutter, traversal streaming, poor CPU optimization or a weak PC port can make a theoretically faster graphics card perform worse than expected in a particular game.
Used-card checks
- Confirm warranty status and test temperatures, fan noise and stability.
- Check required power connectors, card dimensions and your power supply.
- Ask whether the card was used for mining and inspect for excessive dust or worn fans.
- Compare the complete system cost; a cheap GPU cannot compensate for an inadequate CPU or memory configuration.
- Use the local street price, not an old launch MSRP, to judge value.
Base PS5 versus PS5 Pro
This comparison addresses the base PS5. The PS5 Pro has a substantially upgraded graphics configuration and should not be treated as the same target; it requires a separate equivalence analysis.

Bottom line: buy the Radeon RX 6700 10GB when you want the closest practical PC match for a base PS5. The RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 2070 Super are reasonable Nvidia performance-class comparisons, but neither is identical. The RX 6700 XT is faster, and the RX 9060 XT or RTX 5060 class makes more sense for a new 2026 build because those cards are upgrades rather than merely equivalents.
