EA announced a new Seattle studio, Cliffhanger Games, in July 2023 to make a single-player Black Panther adventure with Marvel Games. That project was canceled and the studio closed in May 2025. The wider EA–Marvel collaboration was reported to remain active, but the Black Panther game is no longer in development.
What EA announced in 2023
On July 10, 2023, Electronic Arts announced Cliffhanger Games, a new EA AAA development studio based in Seattle. It was led by Kevin Stephens, formerly associated with Monolith Productions. EA said its team included developers with experience on Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Halo Infinite, God of War and Call of Duty.
Cliffhanger was an EA studio collaborating with Marvel Games; the announcement did not describe it as a jointly owned EA–Marvel studio. Marvel also announced the project that day.
What the Black Panther game was supposed to be
EA described an original, third-person, single-player action-adventure set in the world of Wakanda. The ambition was an “expansive and reactive world” in which players could take on the mantle of Black Panther. The public announcement gave no game title beyond the Black Panther description, release date, trailer, screenshots, full plot, confirmed protagonist details, project-specific platforms, or monetization information. It did not confirm an open-world structure.

How the game fit EA’s Marvel agreement
On October 31, 2022, EA and Marvel announced a long-term collaboration to make at least three original action-adventure games for consoles and PC. The first publicly identified title was a single-player, third-person Iron Man game developed by EA’s Montreal-based Motive Studio. The EA announcement and Marvel’s announcement did not provide a complete slate or release timetable. Black Panther was the second publicly identified project under the arrangement.
Why Cliffhanger and its game ended
On May 28, 2025, reports said EA had canceled the Black Panther game and shut down Cliffhanger Games. The closure came amid broader EA cuts and project cancellations. Coverage of an internal memo attributed the decision to EA’s aim to sharpen its focus and direct creative resources toward its most significant growth opportunities. EA did not publicly establish that the game was canceled because of a creative problem, a development milestone, a licensing dispute, or doubts about single-player games.

The cancellation ended Cliffhanger’s project, but post-cancellation reporting said it did not end the broader EA–Marvel collaboration. Motive’s Iron Man game remained the publicly identified project, and coverage referred to a third, unnamed game. Neither a release date nor a guarantee of release for those projects follows from that reporting. GameSpot’s coverage reported that the wider collaboration continued.
