The Steam Hardware & Software Survey is still running, but its monthly figures can move sharply when the mix of people represented in the optional survey changes. Sudden jumps in Windows, Linux, or language shares are not, by themselves, proof that millions of players switched systems. Valve does not publish enough information about respondent selection or weighting to establish exactly why a particular month changed.
What the Steam Hardware Survey measures
Valve describes the survey as a monthly collection of information about the computer hardware and software its customers use. Participation is optional and anonymous, and Valve says the results help guide technology investment and product decisions. The Steam Hardware & Software Survey is therefore a view of participating Steam users—not a census of all PCs or a direct estimate of the overall desktop-computer market.
Valve’s public description does not specify the number of respondents, how participants are selected, the response rate, whether results are weighted, or how shared machines and unusual results are handled. Without those details, outsiders cannot calculate conventional sampling margins of error or verify the precise cause of a one-month swing.
Why the numbers can change so dramatically
The clearest warning sign is when several categories that would not normally be expected to shift together move abruptly in the same month. Reporting on the March 2024 survey noted that Simplified Chinese client-language share rose by 7.6 percentage points, alongside notable changes in other results. That suggests the group represented in the survey may have changed; it does not reveal why or how Valve’s survey reached that group. Phoronix’s March 2024 coverage documented the language-share change.

The February–March 2025 swings
February 2025 offered a more striking example: coverage described a sharp rise in Simplified Chinese share alongside a sharp increase for Windows 10 and a decline for Linux. In March, reporting described Linux rebounding as Simplified Chinese share fell back. The coincident movement is consistent with a change in respondent mix, but it does not prove that explanation. Valve has not published a technical account establishing the cause. February 2025 coverage and March 2025 coverage describe the reported changes.
Claims that a specific event, region, internet-café practice, or software bug caused one of these swings go beyond what the public information establishes. Treat such explanations as hypotheses unless reliable evidence confirms them.
How to read the latest figures
For September 2026, Steam reported Windows at 95.03%, macOS at 1.92%, and Linux at 3.05%. These are the survey’s reported shares for Steam users in that month, not global desktop operating-system market shares. The live survey page can change as new monthly results appear, so include the month and platform selection whenever quoting a figure.
- Call them shares among Steam survey respondents, rather than shares of all computer users.
- When comparing months, use the same platform filter and denominator.
- Distinguish percentage-point changes from relative percentage changes. For example, a rise from 2% to 3% is a one-percentage-point increase and a 50% relative increase.
- Check neighboring months and longer-term movement before describing a jump as a durable adoption trend.
- Do not compare Steam’s figures directly with general desktop-market estimates as though they measured the same population.
What the survey is—and is not—good for
The survey can help identify broad patterns among participating Steam users over time. Its optional participation and limited published methodology make it a poor basis for treating one month as a precise measure of the entire PC gaming market, or for declaring that a sudden shift reflects mass adoption or abandonment of an operating system. A sustained trend across several releases is more informative than a single volatile result.
