What Happened to ZRRO, the Android Console With a Hover-Touch Controller?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ZRRO was a real Android gaming system proposed in 2015, built around a clever idea: use a controller that detects fingers hovering above its surface to bring touchscreen-style controls to a TV. Its Kickstarter campaign passed its funding goal, but the project was later canceled before it became a normal retail console. It is not a verified product you can buy new today.

What was ZRRO?

ZRRO, reportedly pronounced “zero,” was a proposed Android TV gaming system from Tel Aviv startup ZRRO Technologies. It paired the ZRRO Box, an Android-powered device intended to connect to a television over HDMI, with the ZRRO Pad, a touch-and-hover controller. The goal was to make games designed for phone and tablet touchscreens playable from the couch. Israel21c described the product and company, while Droid Life covered the original campaign-era concept.

Why did it use a hover-touch controller?

Many mobile games depend on tapping, swiping, dragging, pinching, or holding several points at once. A standard gamepad does not naturally reproduce those actions, and a mouse or remote can be awkward when a game expects direct touchscreen input. ZRRO’s pitch was to map touch-like gestures onto a controller while showing the corresponding interaction on the TV. Liliputing’s coverage explains the problem the system was designed to address.

How was the ZRRO Pad supposed to work?

The Pad was described as a flat multi-touch surface using ZRRO’s zTouch sensing technology, rather than a conventional controller centered on sticks and face buttons. The intended interaction was:

  3. Corresponding pointers or touch locations appear on the television.
  4. Touch the surface to confirm an interaction, or move fingers to perform gestures such as swiping, dragging, or pinching.

Coverage described zTouch as combining mutual-capacitance and self-capacitance sensing. That is a description of the proposed technology, not proof of its final consumer performance: the project did not reach a verified retail release, and independent hands-on validation of a finished product is limited. CNX Software reported on the planned controller and noted gaps in the available specifications; Android Authority also covered the concept.

Reported controller features

Campaign-era descriptions and secondary coverage listed power, volume, Recent Apps, Home, and Back controls alongside touch and hover input. An accelerometer and vibration feedback were also mentioned in coverage, but should be treated as reported or planned features rather than independently confirmed specifications for a shipped controller. The precise wireless connection, battery capacity, charging method, hover range, tracking accuracy, and final number of simultaneously tracked fingers were not established in the cited coverage. CNX Software noted that the controller’s communication method was unknown; its discussion of a possible 2.4-GHz link was an assumption, not a confirmed specification. Android Planet also listed controller features.

What were the planned ZRRO Box specifications?

The following are preliminary, campaign-era specifications reported for the proposed Box—not verified specifications for a mass-produced console.

Component Announced or reported detail
Processor Amlogic S802, quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 at 2.0 GHz
Graphics Mali-450MP6, described in coverage as an eight-core GPU
Memory 2 GB RAM
Internal storage 16 GB flash
Expandable storage microSD, reported up to 32 GB
Video output HDMI 1.4a; reported support up to 4K at 30 Hz for video and pictures
USB Two USB 2.0 host ports
Networking Ethernet; Wi-Fi and Bluetooth were also mentioned in some reports, but complete wireless details were not consistently specified
Operating system Android 4.4 KitKat
Software access Google Play Store and Android apps and games were part of the intended offering

These figures were reported by CNX Software, Android Authority, and SlashGear. The available reports did not establish a complete final specification sheet; dimensions, weight, power requirements, and full wireless details were among the missing information.

  • Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light and tactile.
  • 2 Pro back paddle buttons

What “up to 4K” did—and did not—mean

The 4K figure referred to planned video output, reportedly up to 30 Hz for video and pictures. It is not evidence that games would render at native 4K. The reported mobile chipset does not substantiate that performance claim, and there was no verified retail unit on which to test it. CNX Software’s specification coverage describes the output claim.

Would it have worked with every Android game?

No universal compatibility was demonstrated. ZRRO promoted broad access to Android software, including a claim about more than a million games and apps, but that describes a potential software library—not verified operation of every title. Touch-input emulation could help with games built around taps and gestures, but it would not automatically supply physical sticks or buttons, reproduce every phone sensor, guarantee that an app scaled well to a television, or solve Android-version and service requirements. Fast games could also depend on pointer accuracy and latency that were never independently established. Liliputing and Android Authority covered the compatibility ambition; it should not be mistaken for proof of compatibility with every game.

How was the Kickstarter campaign funded?

The campaign sought $200,000 and contemporary coverage reported that it raised more than that target. Early-bird rewards reportedly started at $149, with other campaign tiers listed at $179 or $199 depending on tier and availability. These were campaign reward prices, not present-day retail prices. Android Authority and CNX Software reported the fundraising and reward details.

Some launch coverage gave September or October 2015 as an expected delivery window. Those were estimates made before the project was canceled, not evidence that units shipped. Droid Life and SlashGear reported the campaign-era timing.

Why was ZRRO canceled?

In November 2015, ZRRO announced that it was terminating the project. The company attributed the decision to its prospective manufacturing partner reneging on an agreement and said backers who had pledged more than $2 would be refunded. New Atlas reported the cancellation and refund announcement, and Liliputing also covered the cancellation. The reporting establishes that refunds were announced; it does not establish that every refund was successfully processed.

Did zTouch continue beyond the console?

The sensing idea was presented as a near-field, multi-finger positioning system for touchscreens and touchpads. In August 2015, Electronics Specifier reported that Arrow Electronics and STMicroelectronics had helped ZRRO develop a custom integrated circuit for the controller. That is evidence of development work on the technology, not of broad licensing adoption or a later commercial product. Electronics Specifier reported on the custom-chip effort. Company information lists ZRRO Technologies as having ceased operations in the first quarter of 2019. IVC’s company listing gives that status.

Can you buy a ZRRO now?

There is no verified official retail channel for a new ZRRO system, and the company is listed as inactive. A second-hand listing, if one appears, would not establish that a complete working system is available or supported. Do not confuse a generic Android TV box, touchpad, or air mouse with the ZRRO Box and its specialized hover-sensing Pad. A modern Android TV device may serve a different purpose, but it is not a ZRRO successor and does not reproduce the proposed hover-touch interaction.
