What a red-light means in qualifying
A red-light is an early launch: the car leaves the starting line before the green light. NHRA’s glossary says a red-light during qualifying has no impact on the racer’s attempt, and the time still counts toward qualifying for the event. NHRA glossary
That differs from eliminations. In eliminations, a foul start normally eliminates the racer who leaves early, unless the opponent commits a worse infraction. Qualifying is about recording times and establishing positions; a red-light does not by itself void that qualifying time.
What happens if the car breaks during a qualifying run

The 28-second figure is a rulebook-assigned time for this situation, not a measured elapsed time for the distance covered before the breakdown. The stated conditions matter: the racer must have started and staged properly and received the starter’s signal. The available text does not establish the same treatment for a car that fails before meeting those conditions.
If more than one racer breaks
The 2025 rulebook also specifies an ordering rule for multiple incomplete runs: if more racers break before completing a run than there are open ladder positions, insertion begins with the contestant whose qualifying attempt occurred first. 2025 NHRA rulebook

How the start system relates to the ruling
NHRA describes the Christmas Tree as the electronic starting device. Pre-stage and stage indicators show a car’s position at the line, while the start system and trackside beams trigger independent timing for each lane. NHRA starting-system explanation
A separate detail in NHRA’s 2024 rulebook says an official qualifying attempt requires the vehicle to self-start and self-stage, and that leaving before the start system is activated disqualifies that run’s time.
