If OBS crashes, it stops sending the church’s audio and video to YouTube. Viewers may lose the live picture or sound, and YouTube may report a stream-health problem. Restarting OBS can restore the feed, but YouTube does not guarantee that it will resume the same broadcast or specify a universal reconnect window.
What viewers may see
The immediate issue is an interruption in the encoder feed: OBS is the application sending the church’s audio and video to YouTube. Once OBS stops, it is no longer producing that feed. The exact viewer-facing result—and whether the event remains available—depends on the broadcast’s state and settings. YouTube documents stream-health errors and Auto-start and Auto-stop controls, but does not document an OBS-crash-specific timeout.
Do not promise viewers that restarting OBS will preserve the same event. Check the Live Control Room to see whether YouTube is receiving a feed and whether the broadcast is still in the expected state.
How to check and restore the stream
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Check stream health and the timestamps and details of any errors. YouTube uses these indicators to help diagnose incoming-stream problems.
- Confirm OBS is running and sending usable audio and video. Look for encoder errors and high CPU load. If you are recording locally, check the local archive to see whether it captured the service.
- Check the outbound internet connection. If OBS appears to be working but YouTube is not receiving a healthy feed, investigate the connection from the streaming computer to the internet.
- Verify the incoming preview and audio before announcing that the stream is back. Check both the encoder and YouTube’s dashboard; a successful application restart alone does not prove viewers can see and hear the restored feed.
- If you cannot restore the feed promptly, post an interruption update. Use the church’s chosen update channel so viewers know the live stream is unavailable and where to look for further information.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking that the encoder is current and working. A new stream key is suggested for certain encoder-start errors; it is not a universal fix for an OBS crash. YouTube describes a stream key as the encoder’s “password and address.”

Will restarting OBS bring back the same broadcast?
It may restore an incoming feed if OBS is working and correctly configured, but YouTube’s official guidance does not guarantee that restarting OBS resumes the same broadcast. The reviewed YouTube guidance also does not define one reconnect grace period that applies to every event. Check the actual broadcast state in Live Control Room rather than assuming the event will continue unchanged.
What a backup server does—and does not do
YouTube documents a Backup server URL for HLS ingestion and lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output. The backup URL is an alternate destination for an encoder feed; it does not restart OBS or provide a second active encoder. If OBS has crashed, it cannot send to either the primary or backup destination until an encoder is functioning.

Continuity planning therefore requires an independent working source and a tested procedure. A separate encoder can be part of such a design, but the backup destination alone does not create automatic failover from a crashed OBS instance. Test the setup before relying on it during a service.
