When a fantasy hockey player is out, you can usually bench them, place them in an eligible injured-reserve slot, add a replacement if your league allows it, or drop them. The right move depends on the player’s platform designation, your league’s roster settings, and how long you expect to use the roster spot. Check the return-to-play steps before using an injured-reserve slot: you may need to clear an active roster spot to activate the player.
First, check the player’s designation and your league settings
An injury label does not automatically make a player eligible for a fantasy injured-reserve slot. The platform’s designation and the slots enabled in your specific league both matter.
- Yahoo Fantasy Hockey: Yahoo distinguishes NA for players who are not yet active, IR for players on NHL injured reserve, and IR+ for players tagged IR, day-to-day (DTD), or out (O). Yahoo league settings determine which roster positions are available. Yahoo’s injured-player guidance describes these designations.
- ESPN Fantasy: ESPN says a player must carry an IR, IL, or O tag to use an IR/IL slot, and the league must have that slot enabled. ESPN notes that IL and DTD are used in baseball rather than hockey. See ESPN’s injured-player instructions.
These are platform-specific rules, not universal definitions. League managers can customize roster positions, so check the roster screen and active league settings rather than relying on a designation from another platform.
Choose between benching, IR, holding, and dropping
Use these options according to eligibility, roster capacity, expected absence, player value, and the quality of available replacements. There is no universal injury-duration cutoff that makes one choice correct for every league.

| Option | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Bench the player | Keeps the player on your roster without placing them in an active scoring position. On Yahoo, bench and inactive positions do not score; active players earn fantasy points. Yahoo’s lineup guidance explains scoring positions. | Whether your league lets you change the lineup before the relevant lock time. |
| Move the player to IR or an equivalent slot | Can preserve the player while opening a roster place for a replacement, if the player qualifies and the league has a usable slot. | Exact platform tag, league configuration, and the steps required to activate the player again. |
| Hold the player in a regular roster spot | Preserves the player without relying on an IR slot, but uses a roster place that could otherwise go to a replacement. | Expected absence, player value, roster depth, and add limits. |
| Drop the player | Frees the roster place, but another manager may claim the player. | Whether the replacement opportunity is worth giving up the player and how waivers work in your league. |
An IR slot can be especially useful when you want to retain an injured player and add someone else, but it is not a promise of equivalent production. NHL.com’s fantasy guide recommends looking for a player whose role could grow, either on the injured player’s team or among available waiver options. Consider the player’s opportunity and your roster needs, not just the injured player’s name. NHL.com’s fantasy hockey glossary provides that replacement-strategy guidance.
Use an IR opening only after checking transaction rules
Putting an eligible player on IR or IR+ may open a place for a waiver replacement, but the ability to make an add depends on your league’s transaction and waiver settings. Before choosing a replacement, check add limits, waiver priority or timing, and whether roster moves are allowed at that point in the week. NHL.com’s guide describes the roster-opening strategy; it does not establish a universal waiver rule for every league.

- QUALITY: MasterPieces, an American Puzzle & Game Company, stands behind this product. We ensure satisfaction with our high-quality board games.
For the replacement itself, look for a player likely to receive a useful opportunity or one who addresses a need on your roster. A teammate may see a larger role after an injury, but increased opportunity does not guarantee comparable fantasy production.
Plan for the player’s return before it happens
IR is a temporary roster-management tool, not a permanent extra spot. When the player is healthy or no longer qualifies under your platform’s rules, you may need to move them back to the active roster and make room first.

- Yahoo: Yahoo says an active roster opening is needed to move a player out of an inactive spot. Check the applicable slot and league settings in Yahoo’s injured-player guidance.
- ESPN: ESPN says activation requires an empty roster place, which may mean dropping another player. A healthy player left in IR/IL can also block new adds. If the player becomes healthy after you place a claim, the claim may process, but you still need room to activate them. See ESPN’s claims, waivers, and free-agency guidance.
Before the return, decide which player you would move if the roster is full. That prevents an unexpected activation from forcing a rushed choice between the returning player and a more valuable roster asset.

Lineup deadlines depend on league settings. In some daily formats, changes close when a player’s game starts; weekly or custom leagues can use different schedules. Yahoo says roster and lineup deadlines vary with settings, with game start used by default leagues in specified cases. Quick Recap
Best Value
A practical decision path
- Read the platform tag. Note whether the player is O, DTD, IR, or another designation; do not assume every injury label qualifies for IR.
- Check the league’s roster settings. Confirm whether an IR or equivalent slot exists and whether the player qualifies for it.
- Choose how to use the roster spot. If no eligible slot exists, weigh benching or holding against dropping the player. If a slot does exist, consider whether moving the player there makes room for a useful replacement.
- Check transaction mechanics. Review waiver timing, add limits, and lineup locks before relying on a replacement.
- Plan the activation move. If the player returns while your roster is full, identify the spot you can clear to activate them.
