What happens to your skins, purchases, and progress?
Your Fortnite progress and purchases are stored on the Epic Games account, not on the console account itself. Unlinking disconnects the console from that Epic account, so Fortnite on that console can no longer access the account’s profile and items. The data remains on the original Epic account.
Cosmetic items are shared between platforms linked to the same Epic account. A skin does not transfer to another Epic account when you unlink a console; it remains with the Epic account where it was obtained. If you connect the console to a different Epic account, Fortnite will show that account’s profile instead.
V-Bucks can behave differently from skins
V-Bucks balances are subject to platform rules. Purchased V-Bucks on Nintendo Switch are not shared with other platforms; in Korea, V-Bucks purchased on PC are also not shared. V-Bucks earned through Fortnite Passes, Quest Packs, or Save the World are shared across platforms. Items bought with V-Bucks are available on platforms where you play Fortnite.

Why Fortnite may look like a new or level-one account
If you start Fortnite on a console after unlinking, the game may prompt you to sign in or create an account. Epic may create a new, empty Epic account for that console connection. Seeing a new profile or level-one character does not mean the original progress was deleted; it usually means the console is connected to a different Epic account, or no longer connected to the one with your progress.
How to get your original Fortnite account back
- Find the Epic account with your progress. Sign in to the Epic Games accounts you may have used and check which one contains the Fortnite profile and cosmetics you want. Do this before changing any links.
- Check the console’s current connection. In Epic account settings, open Linked accounts and identify which Epic account is linked to your PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo account.
- Link the console to the correct Epic account. If it is connected to an empty account, Epic’s recovery guidance describes registering and verifying that account if necessary, unlinking the console from it, then linking the console to the Epic account that holds the original progress.
- Check Fortnite again. Launch the game using the console account linked to the original Epic account. If the expected profile still does not appear, contact Epic Games Support rather than continuing to switch links.
Epic’s unlink instructions are to sign in to the Epic account currently linked to the console, open Linked accounts in account settings, choose Unlink for the relevant platform, and follow the on-screen warnings. Labels and screens can change, so use the current account page and Epic support instructions while making the change.

Can you link a different PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo account?
You can change which console account is linked, but this does not transfer Fortnite progress from one Epic account to another. Linking a different console account changes which Epic account’s progress that console can access; progress stays with the Epic account on which it was earned.
If you are replacing one console account with another account of the same platform type, Epic may require you to remove a linking restriction first. Epic states that this restriction can be removed only once every 365 days and cannot be bypassed. Check the current Epic account page before unlinking, particularly if you have already changed a platform link within the past year.

Check these points before unlinking
- Confirm which Epic account contains the progress and cosmetics you want to keep using.
- Consider whether you need to replace a same-platform account subject to Epic’s linking restriction.
- If the account being removed has an active Fortnite Crew subscription, Epic advises canceling it first. That account will not receive new Crew rewards after unlinking.
- Account for platform-specific purchased V-Bucks, especially a Nintendo Switch balance, when checking what appears on another platform.
