Physical orders are governed by the retailer’s terms.
First, identify the seller and your order type
There is no single cancellation rule covering every Modern Warfare 4 preorder. Activision describes the game’s editions and preorder incentives, and confirms that physical editions are sold through select retailers, but it does not set a universal bonus-revocation policy for every storefront or seller. Activision’s edition information and the applicable seller’s terms are the relevant starting points.
- Digital preorder: Check the platform or store where you placed the order, and whether the main game has started downloading or streaming.
- Physical preorder: Check the retailer’s cancellation terms and ask what happens to any bonus code it has already issued or that you have redeemed.
- Region: Store policies can differ by country. The PlayStation details below are specifically from the UK policy; consult the terms for your own region.

PlayStation: downloading the beta is not the same as downloading the main game
The cited UK PlayStation policy concerns whether the main product has started downloading or streaming. It says a qualifying preorder may be refundable before release if that has not begun, subject to the policy’s timing rules. If the preorder included extra content that was immediately accessible, that content stops working when you cancel. Once the main product download or stream has begun, a refund is generally unavailable unless the item is faulty; automatic downloads may affect eligibility.
That policy does not say that playing a beta automatically blocks a refund. If you downloaded or played a separate beta, do not assume that it counts as the main game download; check the order and the terms that apply in your region. The UK policy is not a substitute for local terms.

Steam: Advanced Access playtime can affect a later refund
Steam allows a pre-purchased title to be refunded any time before release under its standard policy. If a title offers Advanced Access, however, time played before release counts toward the two-hour playtime limit used in standard post-release refund eligibility. Playing early therefore may affect whether a later request qualifies, even though Steam’s cited guidance does not specify which MW4 preorder bonuses are revoked when an order is cancelled.
What to check before cancelling
- Open the order receipt or order history and confirm the seller: PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, Activision Store, or a physical retailer.
- Check the applicable country’s cancellation terms. Do not apply the cited UK PlayStation policy to another region without checking its local version.
- Check download status. For PlayStation, the main product’s download or stream status matters to refund eligibility under the cited UK policy; automatic downloads can also matter.
- Check whether you used Advanced Access on Steam. That playtime counts toward the standard two-hour limit after release.
- Ask specifically about bonuses. If content was made available before launch, or a retailer issued a code, ask whether it will stop working or remain usable after cancellation.
What is not established
The available official policies do not support a blanket claim that every MW4 bonus is permanently forfeited, that every preorder can be refunded at any time, or that playing a beta always prevents a refund. The answer depends on the store, region, order type, download or play status, and the particular bonus entitlement.
