PlayStation Plus games stop being playable through your membership when it expires, even if they are still installed on your console. Renewing can restore access to games that remain eligible for your plan, but a game that has left a catalog may stay unavailable. A separate purchase of a specific title can provide its own access, if that title is sold separately.

What happens to each kind of PlayStation Plus game?

The result depends on how you accessed the game. Adding a monthly game to your library is not the same as buying it, and catalog access depends on both your membership tier and whether the title is still offered.

Content	Membership needed	What expiry means
Monthly games claimed to your library	Any current PlayStation Plus tier	You cannot play them through the membership entitlement until membership is active again.
Game Catalog	Extra or Premium	Membership access ends. A title may also leave the catalog independently.
Classics Catalog	Premium	Membership access ends. Check that the title is still in the catalog.

Sony says monthly games can be played while you have an active membership plan. Its PlayStation Plus games page also notes that catalog titles can have removal dates. Check the current catalog listing and any removal notice rather than assuming a game will remain available.

Does downloading a game let you keep playing after expiry?

No. Downloading stores game files on your console; it does not turn a membership entitlement into a permanent purchase. Sony requires the appropriate plan for catalog downloads, and downloaded catalog games may need membership validation when played offline. In a 23 May 2022 notice, Sony said players need to connect to PSN every seven days to validate membership and maintain access to downloaded Game Catalog games in Extra and Premium/Deluxe. That is an offline-validation interval, not a seven-day grace period after a subscription expires. See the PlayStation.Blog announcement.

Will renewing restore access?

Renewing restores eligibility for membership games that are still available to your account and included with your tier. It does not bring back a catalog title that has since left the service. If access does not return, check whether the membership is active, whether your tier includes the relevant catalog, and whether the game remains listed.

What happens to DLC and add-ons?

Purchased DLC for a catalog game depends on access to the base game. Sony says that if membership expires or the base content leaves the service, associated DLC and add-ons also become inaccessible. You can use them again by resubscribing with access to the base game or buying that base title separately. A DLC purchase does not itself provide a license to the game.

What happens to saved data?

Game access and saved data are separate. Sony’s save and transfer guide says saves for downloaded games are stored on the console, while saves for streamed games are stored on PlayStation. Cloud storage is a PlayStation Plus benefit, but Sony’s reviewed support information does not state how long cloud saves remain after membership expires or whether they remain accessible throughout that period.

If a save matters to you, keep a local copy or transfer the data before your membership ends rather than relying on an unstated cloud-retention period. Sony lists 100 GB of cloud storage as a membership feature on its PlayStation Plus support page; that figure describes the storage benefit, not how long saves are retained after expiry.

Should you renew or buy the game?

If you want continued access to several membership benefits or games, renewing at the tier that includes the title is the membership route. If you only want one particular game, check its current PlayStation Store listing and available formats: buying a separate copy may give you an independent license for that game, but does not restore other Plus benefits. Availability varies by title, so do not assume every catalog game is sold separately or in a physical edition.
