It depends on what the game’s servers do. A shutdown may remove online features while leaving offline play intact, disable particular modes or content, or make the entire game inaccessible—including to people who bought it. Check the game’s shutdown notice for exactly which features stop, whether an offline mode remains, and whether the publisher is offering a patch or replacement service.
What a server shutdown can change
Games use publisher-operated servers in different ways. Some need them only for multiplayer or other online features; others depend on them to authenticate an account, start the game, save progress, or run the core gameplay. The European Commission has noted that this dependency can leave a game partly or entirely unusable when servers are discontinued (European Commission answer, 5 June 2024).
Look for a shutdown notice that spells out which functions require the service. “Online services ending” does not by itself tell you whether single-player play will survive.
- Only online features stop: Multiplayer, leaderboards, in-game news, or player statistics may disappear while offline modes continue.
- Some content or modes stop: Account-linked features or downloadable content may become unavailable even if the base game still runs.
- The game becomes inaccessible: If the title relies on publisher servers to run or authenticate, the shutdown may prevent launching or playing it altogether.
Examples: offline play can survive, but not always
The Crew became inaccessible
Ubisoft announced on 14 December 2023 that The Crew would be delisted and remain playable until 31 March 2024. Ubisoft said that after the shutdown the game would no longer be accessible on PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Amazon Luna, or Ubisoft+. The publisher cited server infrastructure and licensing constraints and directed recent purchasers to the store where they bought the game (Ubisoft announcement, 14 December 2023).

Other shutdowns have left offline features intact
Ubisoft’s notice about other legacy games says that online multiplayer, in-game news, and player statistics were discontinued for most of the listed titles, while offline features were unaffected (Ubisoft legacy-service notice). These Ubisoft examples show possible outcomes; they do not establish how another publisher or game will behave.
Check whether a game has a preservation plan
A publisher may take steps to preserve some features, but owners should not assume it will. Ubisoft’s legacy-service update described two different measures: owners of certain PC games could activate single-player DLC before a revised deadline to keep playing it, and Ubisoft was preparing an update to replace the old online services for Anno 2070 (Ubisoft legacy-service notice).

Search the publisher’s announcement and support page for concrete details: an offline patch, replacement servers, downloadable backups, an activation deadline, or a list of modes that will remain. A promise to preserve one feature does not necessarily preserve the entire game.
What owners can do before and after a shutdown
- Find the official notice. Check the publisher’s news and support pages for the game, platform, shutdown date, affected regions, and any follow-up updates.
- Identify server-dependent features. Confirm whether the notice addresses startup, authentication, saves, single-player modes, DLC, multiplayer, and local play separately. If it is unclear, ask the publisher or platform support rather than assuming offline play will work.
- Act before any stated deadline. If the publisher gives an activation or download deadline for content, follow its instructions in time. Keep records of your purchase and relevant notices.
- Check your actual storefront’s policy. If you want to request a refund, contact the store that processed your purchase and review its current terms. A publisher announcement is not itself a guarantee of a refund.
A physical copy, a new console, or extra storage does not establish that a server-dependent game will work after the service ends. The decisive question is whether the software still has a usable offline path or another supported service.

Refunds and consumer-law questions depend on the case
Ubisoft’s 2023 The Crew notice told recent purchasers to consult the store where they bought the game. Ubisoft’s digital PC game refund page describes a 14-day request window and a limit of two hours played; it says purchases through approved third-party retailers are subject to those retailers’ policies (Ubisoft digital PC game refund policy). Those are Ubisoft Store terms, not a rule for every platform, retailer, or country. Check the live policy and the terms that apply to your purchase.
In a written answer dated 5 June 2024, European Commission Vice-President Věra Jourová said EU consumer-protection rules require transparency about material aspects of an offer, protect against unfair commercial practices and contract terms, and provide remedies when digital content or services lack conformity. The Commission also said EU legislation does not set a specific duration for supplying products, including online video games (European Commission answer). Its answer describes EU-wide rules; it does not decide an individual dispute or settle how every national law applies. The Commission says national courts and administrative authorities resolve individual disputes (European Commission answer).
