Refunds are not automatic, and access to a game, add-ons, currency, and other purchases can be treated differently. Check the specific shutdown notice and the seller’s refund process; your rights may also depend on where you live.
What a shutdown can mean for your purchases
A shutdown can affect three separate things: whether you can launch the game, whether particular content or features still work, and whether you can get money back. A purchase record in your account does not by itself guarantee that a network-dependent game will remain playable indefinitely.
Publishers’ notices show why it is important to check the title rather than assume every closure works the same way:
| Game and notice | What happened to access and features | Purchases and refunds |
|---|---|---|
| The Crew — Ubisoft, December 14, 2023 | Ubisoft said the servers would close on March 31, 2024, after which the game would no longer be accessible on PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Amazon Luna, or Ubisoft+. The game had been set to remain playable until that date. | The game and virtual-currency packs were to be delisted. Ubisoft directed recent purchasers to the refund policy of the store where they bought the game; its notice did not announce a universal refund. |
| Concord — PlayStation, September 3, 2024 | PlayStation said the game would go offline beginning September 6, 2024, and sales would cease. Refunded players would lose access. | PlayStation announced full refunds for PS5 and PC purchasers through the applicable digital storefronts. Physical-copy buyers were directed to their retailer. |
| WWE 2K24 — WWE 2K Support, December 8, 2025 | The notice said servers would be discontinued March 31, 2026, ending online matches and Community Creations. It named Play Now, Showcase, MyRISE, MyGM, and Universe as offline modes that owners could continue to use. | The game, virtual currency, and add-ons were to stop being available for purchase on January 31, 2026. The notice did not state a refund arrangement. |
These examples describe the publishers’ stated plans and policies for those games. They do not establish what another publisher will do. In particular, a notice that preserves named offline modes for one title is not evidence that offline play will survive in another.

How to check whether a particular purchase still works
Start with the shutdown notice
Look for the publisher’s official notice for the exact game and platform. Check the date online services end, whether the base game will still launch, which single-player or offline modes remain, and whether community, social, or multiplayer features are being removed. Also note whether the game or its add-ons are delisted before the shutdown date.
Check each type of content separately
A base game, expansion, season pass, in-game currency, consumable, and recurring subscription are distinct purchases. A publisher may end one service while other content remains usable, or may make access to the whole game dependent on its servers. EA’s service guidance, for example, says currency or item inventories may remain usable depending on the game and which services end; that is EA’s guidance, not a rule for other publishers.

For a specific item, check whether the notice says it will remain available, whether it requires a service that is ending, and whether it can be used in any surviving mode. Do not assume that owning an add-on means it will work after the game’s servers close.
How to check whether you can get a refund
- Identify the seller. Review the receipt and transaction history to see whether you paid through a console or PC storefront, the publisher, or a physical retailer. The publisher may not be able to refund a purchase made elsewhere. EA, for example, directs customers who bought through another store or a physical retailer to contact that seller.
- Match the request to the purchase type. Check the policy for the specific transaction: base game, downloadable content (DLC), in-game currency, consumable, subscription, or physical copy. Do not assume a refund rule for a base game applies to every add-on or virtual item.
- Check the deadline and use conditions. Read the applicable seller’s rules for request timing, whether you downloaded or streamed the content, whether you launched the game after buying an item, and whether a technical problem changes eligibility.
- Look for a title-specific refund offer. The Concord notice announced full refunds through relevant digital storefronts, while Ubisoft’s The Crew notice sent recent purchasers to their store’s policy. A special offer for one shutdown does not promise the same result for another game.
- Check local consumer protections. A store’s policy is not necessarily the full extent of your rights. If the purchase is significant or the seller refuses a request, consult the consumer-protection authority for your country or region.
Policies can be narrower than a title-specific offer or local legal rights. For example, EA’s refund policy excludes separately purchased DLC and in-game currencies from its policy refund route. US PlayStation guidance generally requires requests for games and DLC within 14 days and that the content not have been downloaded or streamed, unless it is faulty. For PlayStation Store consumables, its guidance requires a request within 14 days, a PlayStation Store purchase, and no game launch after the purchase. These are examples of US storefront procedures, not universal refund rules.

What consumer law does—and does not—establish
There is no single worldwide rule that guarantees every live-service game will remain playable or that every player will receive a refund when service ends. The result can depend on the country, the terms of the transaction, the kind of content, and the circumstances of the shutdown. Platform policies do not settle every possible legal claim.
European Union
In an April 5, 2024 answer concerning The Crew, the European Parliament explained that EU consumer rules provide remedies when digital content or a service does not conform to the contract, but do not set specific duration requirements for online video games. Under Directive (EU) 2019/770, remedies can include bringing the content or service into conformity and, when that will not be done, a proportionate price reduction or contract termination. National law implements EU directives, and national courts and authorities handle individual disputes.

On June 16, 2026, the European Commission said it could not at that stage propose a general legal obligation to keep games playable after they stop being commercially provided, citing intellectual-property rights. The Commission also described existing consumer-law safeguards, including information about contract duration and termination conditions and the possibility of proportionate refunds. That communication states the Commission’s policy position on that date; it does not decide an individual player’s claim.
Other countries and regions
The examples above do not resolve the law for every US state or federal claim, or for players elsewhere. For a case-specific answer, check the law and consumer-protection guidance where you live, as well as the seller’s rules and the game’s shutdown notice.
