Your save and your right to play a PlayStation Plus catalog game are separate. When a game leaves the catalog, access to the game ends; your saved progress does not give you a license to keep playing. Sony documents where saves are stored and how to copy them, but its reviewed support guidance does not say how long a cloud save for a removed game is kept.
What happens to the game and your save?
PlayStation says some catalog games have removal dates. Once a game leaves, access to the game and its associated DLC or add-ons ends. A saved game file preserves progress; it does not restore access to the game.

Save location depends on how you played. PlayStation Support says a downloaded game’s save is stored on the console, while a streamed game’s save is stored on PlayStation. The two save types are not automatically transferred between downloaded and streamed versions.

PlayStation documents copying saves to online storage and downloading them from there. The steps depend on whether the save is in console storage or game-streaming storage; a save does not automatically move between those locations just because you switch how you play.

How to protect your progress before removal
- For a downloaded game, check the console save. Confirm that the latest progress is present in the console’s saved-data storage.
- Upload the save if cloud storage is available. Use PlayStation Plus saved-data management to upload the console copy to online storage.
- For a streamed game, copy the save from streaming storage. Use the PlayStation Plus save-management options to copy it to online storage, then retrieve it from there when needed.
- Check that the copy is available. PlayStation’s support instructions cover copying and downloading saves; do not assume that a save has moved between storage types without completing the relevant step.

Does Sony keep the cloud save after a game leaves?
Sony’s reviewed support pages do not specify a retention period for a cloud save associated with an individual game after that game leaves the catalog. That does not establish that the save is deleted immediately, nor that it is kept indefinitely. If you want to preserve progress, make and verify a copy before the catalog end date rather than relying on an unstated retention policy.

Cloud storage limits are not retention guarantees
PlayStation Support’s current cloud-storage page, accessed in 2026, lists 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data. It also lists a limit of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. These are storage capacity and file-count limits, not promises about how long saves for removed games remain available.

A save file is not proof of a game entitlement: when a catalog game leaves, PlayStation says access to the game and associated DLC or add-ons ends. Buying the game or resubscribing may provide a way to play only if that game is available to you through that entitlement, but the reviewed guidance does not guarantee that a save will be compatible across editions or platforms. Confirm the game version and platform before relying on an old save.
