Your save does not disappear just because a game leaves the PlayStation Plus Extra catalog. For a downloaded game, PlayStation says saved data is stored on your PS4 or PS5 console; losing catalog access and deleting a save are separate things. PlayStation’s published guidance says you can access that save again if you later buy the game, provided you have not deleted the saved data.
What changes when a game leaves the Extra catalog?
The game is no longer playable through your catalog entitlement after its listed departure date. The save file is a separate matter: a downloaded game’s save remains in console storage unless you delete it or otherwise remove it. PlayStation’s FAQ says that if the title is available on PlayStation Store and you buy it, you can access the save again as long as it has not been deleted. That guidance appears in PlayStation’s May 23, 2022 FAQ; check the title’s current store listing and catalog end date because availability can change.

PlayStation also says associated DLC and add-ons become inaccessible when a game leaves the service. Access may return if you resubscribe or buy the game, subject to the title and add-on being available. Removing a game from the catalog does not itself mean its save has been erased.
Where the save is stored depends on how you played

Streaming is a Premium feature, rather than an Extra benefit, but the distinction matters if you played a title by streaming it through a qualifying plan and later switch to a download. A save does not automatically synchronize between streamed and downloaded versions.

Back up the save before changing consoles or play modes
PlayStation Plus cloud storage is the straightforward transfer route for members. PlayStation’s current US support page lists 100 GB of cloud storage for PS5 and PS4 saves, with a maximum of 1,000 PS4 save files. Cloud-storage details and interfaces may differ by region.
On PS5
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose the saved-data category for the console and game you are moving. For PS4 saves managed on PS5, use Saved Data (PS4).
- Open the cloud-storage controls, select the save, and upload it. On the PS4-on-PS5 screen, PlayStation specifies the Upload to Cloud Storage tab.
- On the destination console, return to the saved-data settings and download the save from cloud storage.
On PS4
- Highlight the game in Library.
- Press OPTIONS, then choose Upload/Download Saved Data.
- Select the save and upload it to cloud storage.
- On the destination PS4, use the same saved-data controls to download the save.
When changing between a streamed save and a downloaded save, upload from the source location and then download or copy the save into the destination location. PlayStation’s instructions explicitly say these saves are not transferred automatically.

What if you want a physical backup?
A USB drive is a limited option for PS4 saved data. PlayStation’s PS5 storage guide lists USB backup for PS4 saves, not PS5 saves. The drive must be formatted as FAT or exFAT, and PlayStation cautions that not all devices are compatible. A USB backup does not restore your entitlement to play a departed catalog game.

- Do not delete the local save if you expect to purchase the game later; PlayStation’s FAQ conditions access to the save on saved data not having been deleted.
- Upload to cloud storage before moving consoles or switching between streamed and downloaded play.
- Check the title’s current catalog end date and store availability. The departure date ends catalog access, not necessarily the ability to buy the game.
PlayStation’s 2022 FAQ also said members must connect their PSN console to the internet every seven days to validate membership and maintain access to downloaded catalog games. That is a membership-validation interval, not a save-file deletion schedule.
