Under the 2026 FIA Sporting Regulations, the FIA calculates a temporary position from the driver’s qualifying classification and applicable unserved penalty places, then applies a grid-allocation procedure that can move other drivers into vacancies. The final race grid, published one hour before the scheduled formation lap, confirms where each driver will start.
How a post-qualifying grid penalty changes the starting order
The FIA forms the race grid using the qualifying results and classification, then applies the penalty procedure in Article B2.5.4 of the 2026 Formula 1 Sporting Regulations, Section B (Issue 09, dated 1 October 2026).
For a classified driver with 15 or fewer cumulative unserved race grid-penalty places imposed during the previous 12 months, the FIA adds those places to the driver’s qualifying classification to calculate a temporary grid position. For example, a driver who qualifies fifth with a three-place penalty has a temporary position of eighth. That arithmetic does not necessarily determine the driver’s final listed position by itself.
Why the final position can look different
The FIA allocates unoccupied positions to classified drivers without penalties in qualifying order, then moves penalized drivers up to fill remaining vacancies. As a result, the temporary position is part of the calculation, not always a simple prediction of the final grid slot.

If two or more penalized drivers have the same temporary position, their qualifying classifications set their order: the slowest keeps the shared position, while the others are placed immediately ahead.
What happens when a driver has more than 15 penalty places?
A driver with more than 15 cumulative unserved race grid-penalty places imposed in the preceding 12 months starts behind all other classified drivers. If several drivers fall into this group, their order follows their qualifying classification.

Does the penalty apply to the Sprint or the Grand Prix?
It depends on the session in which the infringement occurred. Under the FIA rule for grid-position penalties arising from incidents in lap-time classified sessions, the penalty is served in the race. If the infringement occurred in Sprint Qualifying, it applies to the Sprint grid instead. Check the stewards’ decision and the event’s published grid to confirm which start is affected.

The event’s final race-grid document is the authoritative confirmation of the starting order, and the FIA publishes it one hour before the scheduled formation lap. The stewards’ decision explains the penalty; the final grid shows the resulting positions.

The FIA also publishes 2026 penalty guidelines to help explain decisions, but its notice says those guidelines have “no regulatory value.” The Sporting Regulations, rather than the guidelines, govern how the grid is formed. See the FIA notice on the 2026 penalty guidelines.
