In God of War III (2010), Kratos visits Aphrodite in her chamber. She propositions him, and the game presents a sexual encounter as an optional interaction. The scene belongs to the modern video game series. The ancient Greek sources on Aphrodite that survive do not contain it, and the game’s Kratos shares only a name with the Greek personification of strength.

What happens in God of War III

The encounter takes place in Aphrodite’s chamber. According to the God of War Wiki, a fan-maintained reference, Aphrodite invites Kratos to share her bed and then directs him to Hephaestus. Because the wiki is not an official publisher or developer reference, treat that second detail as fan-sourced and check it against the game itself before quoting it.

The encounter is an optional player interaction within the game’s own storyline. It is a modern fictional scene. It is not presented as an episode from ancient myth, and no ancient text is cited for it.

What is and is not established

  • Established: The Aphrodite encounter occurs in God of War III as an optional interaction.
  • Fan-sourced: Aphrodite’s invitation and her direction to Hephaestus afterward come from the fan-maintained wiki rather than from an official game reference.
  • Not established: Aphrodite’s later role in the game’s continuity. No reliable official source confirms what happens to her afterward, so readers should treat fan speculation on that point as unconfirmed.
  • No attributed statement: I did not locate a directly attributed comment from a named developer or official representative about this scene.

Which Kratos is meant

The game’s Kratos

The protagonist of God of War is a fictional Spartan character created for the modern series. He shares the name with an ancient figure, but the games do not present him as that figure.

God of War III - Playstation 3 (Renewed)
  • True to the series roots, the four pillars of game play - brutal combat, intricate puzzles, exploration of awe-inspiring worlds
  • God of War III is the epic conclusion to the Greek mythological trilogy, which will complete Kratos' story
  • New deadly weapons like the Cestus, powerful metal gauntlets with devastating strength, and other brutal instruments of war
  • The menacing creatures of Greek mythology can now be manipulated against their will, to cross chasms, inflict blind rage against enemies
  • God of War III picks up exactly where God of War II left off ? Kratos must take his quest for vengeance to the very stronghold of the Zeus.

The ancient Kratos

The Greek word Kratos (also written Cratus or Cratos) means strength, and in Greek myth it is personified as a figure. Hesiod’s Theogony lists Kratos among the children of Styx who serve Zeus, placing him in the genealogy rather than in any story about Aphrodite. In Aeschylus’s Prometheus Bound, Kratos (with Bia, Force) acts as Zeus’s enforcer during the punishment of Prometheus. That play is by Aeschylus, not Hesiod, although both authors treat Kratos as an agent of Zeus’s order.

What the ancient sources say about Aphrodite

The ancient sources that treat Aphrodite’s relationships do not include Kratos. The table below lists the three texts most often cited for her myths, with dates given as approximations.

Source Approximate date What it says about Aphrodite Does Kratos appear with her?
Hesiod, Theogony Archaic Greek; traditionally dated to around the 8th–7th century BCE Names Aphrodite as the mother, by Ares, of Fear (Phobos), Terror (Deimos), and Harmonia No. Kratos appears only in the Styx genealogy as a servant of Zeus.
Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite Archaic Greek; traditionally dated to roughly the 7th–6th century BCE Tells of Aphrodite’s union with the mortal Anchises and her efforts to manage the consequences of revealing her identity to him No
Odyssey, Book 8 Epic tradition traditionally attributed to Homer; the exact date is uncertain Describes Hephaestus catching Aphrodite and Ares together No

The Harvard Center for Hellenic Studies publishes freely available translations of Hesiod and the Homeric Hymns, which are the most convenient primary texts for checking these entries. For the Odyssey episode, read Book 8 in a published translation before quoting it; the outline above is a summary, not a quotation.

Why the two stories get mixed up

The confusion comes from the shared name and from Aphrodite’s place in the game’s Olympian setting. The game draws on Greek mythology for its world, but the Aphrodite scene in God of War III is a modern invention and should be read as part of the series’ fiction, not as a retelling of an ancient episode.
