An extreme GPU overclocking bench is a set of parts chosen to work together—not a universal shopping list. For routine software tuning, you can often start with a compatible graphics card, its normal cooling, monitoring software and a way to benchmark stability. Subzero benching, especially with liquid nitrogen (LN2), is a specialized hardware project: the graphics card, cooling block, controls, sensors and supporting platform must all be compatible.
Start with the graphics card and its PCB
Choose the GPU before buying specialized cooling or control hardware. The exact card model and PCB revision determine whether a block fits and whether the board’s power delivery and cooling design suit the intended modification. EVGA’s guide for the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti KINGPIN describes modular VRM heatsinks that allow aftermarket watercooling, phase-change and LN2 blocks. Those features apply to that model; they are not evidence that another card supports the same modifications. Choose cooling for the kind of overclocking
Routine software tuning
For ordinary tuning, use the card’s existing cooling system unless the specific GPU and cooling design call for another supported option. Keep the goal distinct from subzero benching: a utility that adjusts clocks does not make a card or cooling setup suitable for LN2.
Water, phase-change or LN2 benching
For a cooling modification, confirm that the cooler is designed for the exact card and PCB revision. A GPU-specific LN2 block is a real hardware category, but the EVGA example only documents a compatible accessory path for its RTX 2080 Ti KINGPIN. It does not establish fit for newer GPUs or other vendors’ cards. Check the block maker’s compatibility information against the precise board before purchasing or assembling anything.

LN2 is a specialized setup, not simply a colder version of routine tuning. The available manufacturer documentation here establishes hardware features and an example block path, not insulation, condensation-control, or safe LN2 operating instructions.
Understand what motherboard controls do—and do not do
Some motherboards offer controls for extreme CPU overclocking, but those features do not establish GPU compatibility. ASUS documents an LN2 jumper and a feature that reduces the CPU ratio during extreme setup on the ROG MAXIMUS Z790 EXTREME. That is platform context, not a requirement for GPU LN2 or proof that a particular GPU block will work.

For additional controls, ASUS describes its OC Panel as including Subzero Sense for subzero temperature readings and VGA Hotwire for hardware-level GPU overvolting on supported hardware. Whether those functions are usable depends on the motherboard and connected hardware. Confirm compatibility rather than assuming any board or GPU exposes the required connections.
Size power delivery for the complete bench
There is no universal PSU wattage established for an extreme GPU overclocking setup. Select the PSU and cabling against the current specifications of the chosen GPU, CPU and motherboard, plus any power modifications and the intended test load. A recommendation based only on the GPU’s stock rating may not reflect the rest of the platform or the way it will be tested.

Choose the supporting platform around the workload
The CPU, motherboard and memory support the test platform and can influence benchmark results, but no particular CPU or memory kit is established as mandatory for GPU overclocking. If you are comparing benchmark scores, keep the platform in mind so you do not mistake a CPU or memory difference for a GPU gain.
Memory capability depends on the memory, motherboard and CPU together. ASUS notes that maximum DRAM frequency depends on all three, while XMP, EXPO and DOCP load memory profiles. Treat those profiles as platform configuration features, not a guarantee of a specific memory speed or GPU overclock.

Plan for monitoring, benchmarking and validation
At minimum, plan how you will observe the GPU and how you will check performance and stability for the workload you care about. Subzero temperature measurement and hardware-level voltage control may need supported add-on hardware, such as the ASUS OC Panel features described above. General tuning or benchmark software is not a substitute for hardware compatibility or a safe LN2 procedure.
NVIDIA’s general overclocking guide names ASUS GPU Tweak, Intel XTU and 3DMark in its workflow and mentions other utility alternatives. That guidance is historical and general; it should not be treated as a current LN2 procedure. Verify present-day software support for your hardware before relying on a utility.

Use this compatibility checklist before buying
- GPU: Record the exact model and PCB revision; check its power delivery and cooling design for the intended modification.
- Cooling: Match any aftermarket cooler or LN2 block to that exact card and PCB revision.
- Controls and sensors: Confirm motherboard, add-on hardware and GPU support for any desired temperature sensing or voltage control.
- Power: Check PSU and cable requirements against the complete system, modifications and test load using current component specifications.
- Platform: Select CPU and memory for the benchmark workload; account for their effect on results without treating a particular part as universally required.
- Validation: Identify appropriate current monitoring and benchmark tools, and keep software tuning separate from subzero hardware procedures.
