What Is 4K Video Resolution—and Should You Stream in 4K on YouTube?

4K is 3840 × 2160 for standard 16:9 video, but YouTube uploads and live streams need different settings. Compare the recommended bitrates and decide whether your setup benefits from 4K.

4K video is usually 3840 × 2160 pixels for a 16:9 frame, which YouTube labels 2160p. That is four times the pixel count of 1080p. Whether to use it depends on what you mean by “stream”: uploading a finished 4K video or broadcasting live in 4K have different settings and trade-offs.

For prerecorded videos, choose 4K when your footage was captured at that resolution, your editing workflow can handle it, and the extra detail serves your viewers. For live broadcasts, use 4K only if your encoder and upload connection can sustain YouTube’s recommended bitrate with headroom. YouTube does not offer low latency for 4K live streams.

What does 4K resolution mean?

For a standard 16:9 video, YouTube lists 2160p (4K) as 3840 × 2160 pixels. A 1080p frame is 1920 × 1080, so 4K contains four times as many pixels. YouTube adapts the player to videos with other aspect ratios; avoid adding black bars or padding to the video itself. YouTube’s resolution and aspect-ratio guidance provides the dimensions.

The resolution describes the image dimensions, not image quality by itself. Lighting, focus, camera movement, source detail, color, compression, and the viewer’s playback conditions all matter. Exporting a poorly lit or low-resolution source at 4K does not restore detail that was never captured.

Uploading a prerecorded 4K video vs. livestreaming in 4K

These are separate workflows. An upload is a finished file that YouTube processes after you submit it. A live broadcast is encoded and sent continuously to YouTube, which transcodes the incoming stream into formats viewers can play. Do not use the upload bitrate table as a live encoder setting: the two sets of recommendations serve different purposes.

Workflow What the bitrate applies to Key decision
Prerecorded upload The video file you encode before uploading Match the export to the recording’s frame rate and choose the appropriate SDR or HDR recommendation.
Live broadcast The encoder’s outgoing video feed to YouTube Meet the recommended ingest bitrate for the resolution, frame rate, and codec while keeping connection headroom.

Recommended bitrate for YouTube 4K uploads

YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings specify the following video bitrates for 2160p. These are recommendations for encoding the uploaded video—not a universal internet-speed requirement for viewers.

For uploads, encode at the same frame rate as the original recording. YouTube’s general recommendations include progressive scan, MP4, H.264 video, variable bitrate, and BT.709 color for standard SDR. Deinterlace interlaced footage before uploading. The published bitrate figures are recommendations, not a stated hard maximum.

Live format AV1 or H.265/HEVC H.264
2160p at 30 fps 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
2160p at 60 fps 35 Mbps 50 Mbps

These are encoder-to-YouTube ingest recommendations. YouTube advises testing your upload bitrate and leaving bandwidth in reserve; its streaming tips recommend keeping about 20% headroom. For example, a stream configured for a particular bitrate needs a connection that can carry that traffic reliably in addition to other household or production use. A speed-test result is not a guarantee of sustained performance.

  • Keyframes: Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Protocol and codecs: YouTube Live supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, subject to the settings supported by your encoder and stream configuration.
  • HDR: YouTube’s live guidance recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR. AV1 is not supported for HDR in the listed settings.
  • Latency: Low latency is unavailable for 4K/2160p live streams. YouTube optimizes these streams for quality at normal latency, so they are not the best choice when near-real-time audience interaction is essential.

Should you upload or livestream in 4K?

4K is a good fit for prerecorded video when

  • You recorded the source footage in 4K and can export a genuine 2160p file.
  • Your editing computer and software can work with the footage, either directly or using proxies.
  • Fine detail, gameplay visuals, demonstrations, or large-screen viewing matter to the content.
  • You can accept larger files and the time needed to transfer, edit, encode, and upload them.

YouTube says that videos uploaded in 4K consistently achieve higher watchtime on TVs compared with lower resolutions. Its guidance does not give a numeric lift or describe a methodology, so treat this as YouTube’s qualitative observation—not a guaranteed result for an individual channel. YouTube’s 4K creation guidance also recommends good lighting and recording in 4K; selecting a 4K export cannot fix weak source footage.

4K is a good fit for live video when

  • Your camera, capture chain, encoder, and connection can sustain the chosen frame rate and recommended bitrate.
  • You have tested the stream under the same network conditions you expect during the broadcast, with bandwidth left over.
  • Image detail matters more than having YouTube’s low-latency option.

Stay at a lower live resolution if your upload connection fluctuates, the encoder struggles, or you need low latency. A stable stream at a resolution your setup can sustain is more useful than a 4K configuration that repeatedly drops frames or disconnects.

Can every viewer watch your video in 4K?

No. The resolution you upload or send to YouTube does not guarantee that every viewer receives 4K. YouTube processes live input and uploaded files, and playback quality depends on processing, the viewer’s device and browser, codec support, display, available connection bandwidth, and the quality selected in the player. YouTube says a browser or device that supports VP9 is required to watch new 4K uploads in 4K. Check YouTube’s upload guidance for that requirement.

YouTube’s separate guidance for purchased UHD movies and TV titles calls for a consistent download speed of at least 15 Mbps and notes that playback may fall to HD or SD when bandwidth is inadequate. That figure applies to purchased UHD playback in that guidance; it is not a general minimum for watching every 4K YouTube video or a creator’s upload bitrate. YouTube’s UHD playback guidance covers that specific case.

How to prepare a 4K recording and edit it

  1. Check your source: Confirm that the camera, phone, or gameplay capture setup records at 4K and at the frame rate you intend to publish. YouTube’s 4K creation guidance recommends selecting 4K on the phone or camera.
  2. Improve the shot before recording: Use adequate lighting, stable framing, and focus. YouTube notes that lighting can improve color and reduce grain; enabling a 4K setting does not repair poorly lit footage.
  3. Move and store the footage: Copy camera footage from an SD card to a suitable storage drive, such as an external SSD, if that fits your workflow.
  4. Edit in capable software: The YouTube guidance names Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and Final Cut Pro as examples of editing software for 4K workflows. The computer must also be able to process the footage.
  5. Use proxies if editing is slow: Create lower-resolution 1080p or 720p proxy files for smoother editing, then export from the original 4K media.
  6. Export for YouTube: Export at 2160p or 3840 × 2160, use the recording’s frame rate, and choose the upload bitrate range for the frame rate and SDR/HDR format in the table above.
  7. Allow processing time: YouTube needs to process the upload before 4K playback is available. Check the playback quality after processing rather than assuming the highest resolution is immediately selectable.

Common 4K problems and what to check

  • “4K” is not available after upload: Allow YouTube to finish processing the video, then check again. Also verify that the viewer’s browser or device supports VP9 and that 4K is selected in playback quality.
  • The live stream buffers, drops frames, or disconnects: Test the sustained upload rate, reduce competing network traffic, and keep the recommended bandwidth headroom. If the connection cannot reliably sustain the configured bitrate, lower the live resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a stable setting.
  • The encoder cannot keep up: Check whether the computer or hardware encoder can encode the chosen 4K frame rate and codec. Reduce the workload or use a lower resolution/frame rate if it cannot sustain the stream.
  • The live stream has too much delay: 4K low latency is not available on YouTube. If low-latency interaction matters, choose a supported lower-resolution configuration instead.
  • The video looks soft or noisy despite a 4K export: Inspect the original recording, focus, lighting, and camera movement. A 4K output setting cannot create source detail or remove all image noise.
  • The 4K edit stutters: Use proxies, such as 1080p or 720p, and export from the original footage when editing is complete.
