In Blizzard’s example, FallenSlayer#3592, “FallenSlayer” is the chosen nickname and “3592” is the code that distinguishes that full identifier from others using the same nickname.
How to read a BattleTag
Blizzard describes a BattleTag as a player-chosen nickname used to identify a Battle.net account across its games, websites and community forums. An account can have only one BattleTag, but the nickname does not have to be unique: different players can choose the same name. Blizzard assigns a numeric ID so the complete BattleTag identifies the player more specifically. Blizzard Support and Blizzard’s BattleTag FAQ explain the distinction.
- Nickname: the name before the hash mark, such as
FallenSlayer. It can be shared by multiple players. - Code: the numeric ID after the hash mark, such as
3592. - Full BattleTag: the nickname,
#separator and code together:FallenSlayer#3592.
Where to find or change your BattleTag
To check or update your own BattleTag, sign in to your Battle.net account and open Account Details. Blizzard’s current support information directs players to the BattleTag section there; the precise placement or button wording may vary as the account interface changes.
Using someone’s BattleTag to add them
The full identifier can help you find or add a particular player when you know their nickname and code. Blizzard’s original announcement described entering both parts to send a BattleTag friend request, while also noting that some in-game actions could add a player without manually entering the code. Those instructions are historical, so the exact menus and options may differ in the current Battle.net app or game.

Does a BattleTag code always have four digits?
Not necessarily: Blizzard’s FallenSlayer#3592 example has four digits, but the available official information does not establish four digits as a universal rule or specify a current code length. Treat the number displayed with the BattleTag as the code rather than assuming a fixed length.
Is the BattleTag code a password?
No. It is the numeric part of a player identifier, not a password or account sign-in credential. Share the full BattleTag when someone needs it to identify or add you; do not confuse it with authentication information.
